“So not him either.”

“So someone else knows what you’re up to.”

I swung a hand to indicate my coffee table. “Uh…yeah.”

“And they want you to keep going, and they’re giving you the resources to do it better and more thoroughly.”

“Uh…” my pause was longer this time, and my stress on the next word was stressier, “yeah.”

“So what are you gonna do?”

“I know what I’m not gonna do. I’m definitely not going after those rapists. After I dealt with the ringleader, they’re all gonna be on their guard. It wasn’t easy rounding up a roofied tight end. I don’t need to attempt to wrangle the offensive line.”

“I think this is a good call,” she mumbled.

Why was she acting like this was no big deal?

“Luna, babe, this Clarice lady wasin my housewaiting for me.”

She reached for the papers and flipped through them.

I downed the rest of my wine and got up to get more.

I brought the bottle and topped Luna up too.

“What’s this?” she asked.

“What?” I asked back.

She handed me the papers that had been flipped deep to the back of the stack.

In fact, it was on the last page.

There was a decent-quality, color, photocopied picture of a white woman with a mass of blonde hair, a lot of eyeliner, and the plate denoting it was a mugshot under her chin.

Underneath the picture it said,Missing women. Divinity. Roosevelt, between 16thand 24thStreets. Evenings. Take $200 cash. CD will reimburse.

“Holy shit,” I croaked.

“What’s it mean?”

I tossed the papers on the table again. “Whoever this is knows I’m looking into those missing women.”

Luna held her wineglass and tapped its side with her finger as she stared at me.

“Luna, are you there?” I demanded.

“Right, first, we go see this Clarice lady.”

What?

And…

We?

“We also go get that car, or at least look at it,” she went on.

“Are youinsane?” I asked.
