I sit up and straddle his lap. “That was very noble of you—to sacrifice your life for someone else.”

“It was the right thing to do. She would have lost everything, and I had nothing to lose.”

Leaning in, I brush my lips against his. He cups my ass and pulls me closer, nipping at my bottom lip.

“And now you’re a badass bodyguard who saves damsels in distress for a living.”

“Guess so.” He sucks on my bottom lip, running his tongue over it.

“And do you treat all your clients this well?”

“Only one.” His lips claim mine as he runs his hands up my spine to the back of my neck. I roll my hips against him as our tongues collide in a feverish kiss.

“Is this how all your clients repay you for being such a good guard dog?” I grind over him again, whimpering as his thick cock rubs against me.

“Only one.”

He stands, lifting me in his arms and walks us to my bedroom without breaking our kiss. Laying me on the bed, he kisses every inch of my body and fucks me hard, then slow. He makes me feel cherished, wanted, and unbelievably sexy as he ravishes me in ways I’ve never experienced. When I finally succumb, I’m so full, satisfied and complete.

That’s what I want to tell him, but I pass the eff out.

Chapter nine

Mindy

Being on time for Pilates was clearly a one-time thing. As disciplined as Tate is, there was no way we were getting out of my apartment on time. To be honest, I’m not sure I have enough energy to last a whole hour of class anyway. I cock my head toward Tate. “Remember. Stay scarce.” My eyes drop to his to-go coffee mug that reads “Fart Master”with an arrow pointing up. I snicker before leaving him to fend for himself.

Class is tough, and I barely survive, but I manage not to fall asleep. Gathering my things, I scope the room for Tate, shocked when I don’t spot him. Becky waves to get my attention, and I pull out my phone and put it to my ear like I’m answering as I hurry out. When I step outside, I find Tate immediately. He’s on a call, his “all work and no play” scowl firmly in place. As I approach him, he disconnects.

“Hey. Everything okay?”

“Let’s walk and talk.”

That doesn’t sound like a yes. “Okay…”

“That was Detective Rochel. The flower arrangement was a dead end. They tracked it to a florist a few miles from your place, but the order was made online with a prepaid card.”

“Can’t they trace where the order came from?”

“Tried. It was so scrambled, their IT guy couldn’t lock on a specific location.”

“What does that mean?”

Tate opens the passenger door for me. “It means whoever this is is smart and knows how not to get caught. And they’re putting in a lot of work to get your attention.”

That doesn’t sound good.

“I don’t understand why someone would want my attention that bad.”

“Don’t get in your head. No one is going to get near you.”

“I know. I just want my life back.”

I’m not even sure that’s true anymore. I don’t want to go back to Russell. I don’t want to go back to being alone all the time. Eating alone, watching reality TV alone. I hate to admit it, but IlikeTate being around. “Guess we’re stuck being roomies for a bit longer. Darn.”

“Darn is right. Get in the car.”

“Bossy,” I mock, squealing when he spanks my ass as I climb in. I have Tate take me to the grocery store for some necessities before my shift at Bev’s. He makes me wait while he does a sweep of my apartment and helps carry in the bags. “Can I ask you a question?”
