Tate drops them on my kitchen counter. “Shoot.”

“When you’re done with me, what do you do next? Do you follow around a new client?”

“Depends.”

“On what? If any damsels are distressed and shoot the bat signal into the sky?”

“Somethin’ like that.”

Not really the answer I wanted to hear. “So, do you only work with women?” I hide my face so he won’t see my reaction if he says yes. His hand snakes around my waist, and I jump, dropping the strawberries as he turns me in his arms to face him.

“Ask me what you want to ask me.”

“I did.” In a completely beat-around-the-bush fashion.

“Ask. Me.”

“Fine, have you done this before? Slept with a client?”

“No.”

“Have you ever—?”

“Felt this way about a client? No.”

My eyes widen. “Oh…”

“But that talk is for another day—when she’s not my client. Until then, it’s business as usual.” He tugs me closer, dips his chin, and presses his lips to mine.

“You have a tough job,” I drawl against his mouth.

“My client’s quite difficult. Doesn’t listen and is very, very defiant.” His tongue slides past my lips, and my body becomes limp in his arms. Hoisting me up, he plants my butt on the counter.

“She’s also smart.” Kiss. “Funny.” Kiss. “Strong.” Kiss. “And absolutely gorgeous.” Kiss.

“You think I’m funny?” I try to hold back a laugh.

“Hysterical,” he murmurs against my lips.

“And gorgeous?”

“That’s just a perk.” He tugs me closer, and I shimmy my legs around his waist.

“Well, in that case, why don’t we take this to the bedroom? I’ll show you allyourperks—”

Tate’s pocket starts vibrating, killing the moment. “Hold that thought.” Dropping my legs, he slides his phone out and curses at the screen. “Fuck, I gotta take this.”

“Booo…” I jump off the counter as he goes into the living room, a pout firmly in place. The ringtone I set for Fay starts playing, and I replace that frown with a smile. “Hey, buttercup.”

“Hey! I was waiting for you to call me! Theo said he spoke with Tate yesterday after you guys left the police station and it didn’t go well.”

“No truer words have been spoken.”

“Oh, Mindy. I’m so sorry.”

“Don’t be. It’s good to know Chad isn’t atotalcreep, but I kind of hoped he was so this could be over.”

“It will be soon.”
