“We get you’re keeping trouble from our door. But trouble’s got a fucking way, ya’ know?” says Christian.

He doesn’t need to tell any of us that twice.

“Got it,” I say. “Right now, I’m helping a friend. And when it comes to you needing to know. I’ll be faster than fucking lightning.”

At the cars, Diego comes over. “What do you think?”

“I think I don’t like any of this.”

“We should bring them in.” He leans on my car as Nicolo joins us.

Nicolo sighs. “We do that, and there’s trouble and maybe the wrong kind. Our business went smoothly in Arizona, but the blockades and price hikes are reaching there. I know Leo wants to see if O’Grady reaches out.”

“Unless,” I say, “we know something they should know. And right now, we’re still on the side of no. I don’t want to start a needless war and have the real culprits slide away in the melee.”

Diego frowns. “You fucking think they want that? Whoever it is?”

“It could be the Lowlanders.”

But from Nicolo’s tone, I don’t think he believes that, not after his meeting with O’Grady.

“We’re all on the same page.” I run a hand over the back of my neck. “We don’t know enough about the Smith Group or this Genesis. Until we do, we have to take into account someone’s waiting to take from us.”

“Or O’Grady.” Nicolo eyes us both. “And the network we’ve uncovered with the girls?”

“Take that to Leo right now, and he’s probably gonna do something, and it’s our job to make sure the things he jumps into are well-informed. We know of the network and who makes it up, but not the big who are behind it,” I say.

“Your friend Fallon?” asks Diego.

“Not telling me shit. Or he can’t. He wants his sister protected, but he’s also in prison as a deal. To keep someone elsesafe.” I shrug. “I don’t know. And I need to keep poking until I get the right questions asked.”

Nicolo looks at me. “There’s something else?”

“There was an incident at the college,” I say. “Karlee was attacked, but I got there in time, but . . .”

“Move her.”

I glare at Diego, who doesn’t bother hiding his smile. “I don’t know who was behind it.”

“Does it matter?” Diego asks. “Keep her safe, and we’ll help out.”

“And keep digging into all of this. Genesis, the gangs, his first-grade teacher’s mother,” I say.

“That easy?” Nicolo rolls his eyes.

“Like that cake your woman has for you.”

Diego’s head snaps to me. “And mine, what’s she got me?”

“A kick in the ass if you’re lucky, but probably cookies.”

“Asswipe,” he says as I get in my car and take off.

Wendy looks me up and down when I get there. “You look worse than me. Do I get to sleep in? I’ve got Rachel, who’s been with me a few years and is excellent, ready to step in for a few hours . . .”

“We’re moving location.”

“Where?” She gets her things.
