A muscle works in my jaw. “My place.”

“Oh, how I wish I could stay for this.”

“No, you really don’t. Where’s Avatar?”

“Her room. She took a long shower when I got here. Call me, and I’ll send Alan home and get a replacement for him tonight too.”

I wave her off and then go to Karlee’s door and knock. “Get your bags, get packed, and get your ass out here.

My place isn’t really big enough either, but I pack up the fridge contents in cold bags and then the new items in the cupboards and set them by the door.

Then I check my gun and make sure I have the second clip. I don’t think I’ll need it, but right now, being safe is smarter than being sorry.

She stomps out, and I stare at her.

At least she travels light. But man . . .

Fucking Karlee.

She should look ridiculous. She’s got her hair in two pigtails, some chunky-ass Mary Janes, and a short pink skirt with long white socks that reach her thighs. She’s wearing one of those puffy-sleeved, buttoned fitted shirts with the rounded collar. Except it has ‘Fuck the Power’ written on it in shocking pink.

“You’re so weird, but you only have a few bags. Let’s go.”

She sighs and stomps out. I take her heavy bag, the groceries, set the alarm, and lock up.

It takes a couple of minutes to reach my place. I dump her stuff in the spare room, and then I put the food away. I need to send some texts before I make up the room, so I sit on the sofa and start sending.

“For fuck’s sake, Karlee. Don’t stand there staring.”

“I’m not.”

“Yeah, you are. It’s like little fucking daggers.”

She drifts over and sits next to me on the sofa. “This is more you.”

“What is?”

“Where you live.”

“Well, don’t get used to it,” I say, putting the phone down. “Tomorrow, I will find you somewhere else.”

“Home?”

I cut her a sharp look. “No.”

Karlee doesn’t speak for a long time, but then she puts her hand on my arm. “There’s a reason, and I know it has to do with my brother. What did Fallon do, and where is he?”

Chapter Ten

KARLEE

“I don’t know what your brother did.”

I wait, but Tizio doesn’t continue.

“And—”

“Karlee, he’s away, and that’s all I’m at liberty to say.”
