Two weeks with Lucy sounds like a dream come true. Two weeks trying to find my old me. Two weeks to finally get the closure we both need.

And maybe we can even find that old spark that led to many a hot night.

How am I going to find her in a city as big as Los Angeles?

My headache makes it hard to think. If I hadn’t drunk so much, I would be able to figure things out.

But now that I found her again, felt her peace again, I know I need her in my life.

If she’ll give me the time of day.

The babysitter walks out the front door, and I start taking off my shoes after a brutal day at work when my cell rings.

“Hey, Lani.”

“Hey, yourself. How’ve you been?”

“I just got home from work.” With my shoes off, I wiggle my toes, then take off my black socks. “The hotel was full last night. I had twenty rooms to clean. Half of them looked like parties had been thrown. It was a nightmare, and I didn’t need a hellish shift after the night I had.”

“I’m sorry, Luce. Was your night really that bad?”

“Oh yes. From giving me alcohol when I asked for soda to trying to force a kiss out of me… Let’s just say if I pass him in public, I’ll cross the street before I even look at his face again.”

“Oh, no, please tell me you’re joking.”

“I wish. I tried to leave early because… I wasn’t feeling it, and he did not take that well at all. He was all hands and was pushing me against a wall. It was scary there for a second.” Tugging my arm through the polyester knit shirt that I’m sure the cleaning ladies used back in the nineteen sixties when the hotel was first built, I huff with the energy it takes to remove my crappy maid uniform.

“Did he hurt you?”

“He never got the chance.” Thanks to Apollo.

With my uniform finally in a heap on the floor by my feet, I head to my bedroom, trying my best to be quiet so I don’t wake Aurora who’s napping peacefully on my bed.

“You got away from him?”

“No. He was really trapping me. And he was much stronger. I couldn’t break free.” Slipping into a T-shirt and some shorts, I tiptoe back into the living room, running my hand through my hair to tame it a bit. “A guy saw what was going on and helped me.”

“Oh, my God. That guy was a hero. What happened? Did you thank him?”

“Of course, I thanked him. And then I left and that was that.” Lani knows my story with Apollo, so I prefer leaving out a few details.

I begin picking up toys that are scattered around the living room, silently wondering why I pay the babysitter so much when she doesn’t ever clean up after the kid. It was agreed that she would, yet this happens every single time.

“I’m sorry you had such an awful night. By the way, I heard that Apollo’s band played there last night.”

“That wasn’t in the original program, and I left before they were up.” Hopefully, she’ll leave it at that.

“Are you telling me that no one there mentioned Apollo or his band? I don’t buy it. You're hiding something, so spill the tea.”

I sigh. There is no way I can keep this a secret. Besides, I want to talk about what happened between us. Even if just to make it that much more real. “Fine. It was Apollo who rescued me.”

“No way!”

“I know. What are the odds?” Putting the last toy away, I go to take a seat, finally getting a chance to relax before Aurora wakes up.
