It sucks that they feel that way, but I am glad Ares hasn’t told anyone my news.

This is my life, and I want to keep Lucy and Aurora to myself at least long enough to get to know my daughter and prove myself to Lucy.

I did manage to get Lucy to give me her phone number, and I gave her mine before we parted ways that day.

I have called her only once each day, as she specified, though if she’d let me, I could call her all day long and talk to her for hours each time.

And I ask about Aurora right off the bat too. I’m so curious about that little girl, that little part of me. I want Lucy to understand this is about our daughter more than it’s about her.

But the truth is, it’s about Lucy, too. She’s always been the best person I have ever known. How could I not be interested in her? As far as I see it, they are a package deal, and I want it all.

Heading to the room a few doors down from mine for band practice, I smile while shoving my hands into my pockets.

I pulled some strings to get us some smaller venues in the Los Angeles region so we could stay around town longer than expected.

The idea that we could try out our new songs on smaller crowds and really be able to gauge their reactions proved to be a hit with our record company.

Our bass, Reece, comes up to walk next to me. “Hey, Lo. You letting your hair grow out?”

My blonde roots have begun showing since I haven’t been to a salon to get it dyed again. “I’m thinking about going back to my natural color. What do you think?”

He shakes his head. “No way Ty will let you do that. It’s too boy next door for the band’s brand.”

“I used to be able to pull the look off. I bet I could do it again.” The jet-black dye job looks way too rocker and not enough daddy to a little girl.

Just as I open the door to the practice room, Chen bangs on his drums.

“Chen’s here.”

Chen holds his drumsticks up, waiting for us to come inside and close the door before he drops them on the drums, creating something fantastic.

Reece and I watch him as he goes on, and then we clap when he’s done.

“That was bitchin’.” Reece goes to get his favorite bass guitar off the rack. “Let me see if I got something to go with that.” He begins playing around on his guitar.

And I go to the little fridge to get myself a cold bottle of water. “Anyone want a water?”

“I’ll take a beer,” Reece calls out.

“Beer for me too.” Chen slaps the cymbal, making a loud sound.

Getting two beers from the fully stocked fridge, I can’t help it as my mouth waters, wanting to taste the crisp drink. But I can’t drink even something as simple as a beer.

I made a promise, and I’m going to keep it. And a sip of beer is enough to ruin the entire week of sacrifice.

Not worth it.

Tossing the beers to the guys, I open my bottle of water and chug it, pretending it’s a beer.

“So, you took the doctor’s advice to heart,” Amari, our lead guitarist, says as he comes into the room.

It’s as good an excuse for my not drinking as any. “Yeah, I figure I’ve given the hospitals around the world enough of my money. If the doc says no alcohol, then I’m not going to drink any.”

“Like never again?” Chen asks with a frown. “I can’t imagine life without alcohol.”

Yeah, it’s not easy at all.

But I have more important things than alcohol that I want in my life, so it’s history and that’s that.
