I hate to admit it, but we have a kid that we both need to be here for. And if we’re in a romantic relationship, chances are I’ll fuck that up. That would leave us on bad terms. We can’t be on bad terms and still raise our kid together.

However, I want us to be a family. I’m going to make sure we are. That means Lucy will have to get used to having me around a lot more because I’ll do everything in my power to be with my daughter as often as I can.

I want to be in Aurora’s life. All the time. Not just part of the time. And I will make that happen.

And I’ll take any opportunity I can to woo Lucy. Because I want her in my life too.

If we ever get together and become the family I want us to be, Lucy’s life will change. She won’t have to work if she doesn’t want to. She can be whatever she wants to be, even if she just wants to be a mother to our child.

For now, that’s all I need to worry about. If I can control my lust, then we might be able to make this work.

“Daddy, do you like this shirt for my teddy?” Aurora holds up a white t-shirt. “It’s just like yours.”

“No, it isn’t, little birdie. See? I have on a button down and some jeans.”

“It is, Daddy. You were with lots of girls. Why were they hugging you and sitting in your lap? Are you their daddy too?”

“Where did you see that?”

“Mommy’s phone.”

Well, I don’t like that at all.

“How about we dress your teddy like something really cool?” I pick up a doctor’s coat. “How about we make him a doctor?”

Shaking her head, she finds some black leather pants and hands them to me. “I want him to look like you, Daddy.”

I cannot have my five-year-old daughter idolizing rockstars. “You know, I’m not always dressed like that. I wear normal clothes too. Like right now. See?”

She runs her hand through my hair. “You still look like a rock boy.”

“A rock boy?” I have to ask.

“Mommy calls you that. She told Aunty Lani you’re a rock boy, and you will always be one. What is a rock boy, Daddy?”

“Mommy was just playing, little birdie, because I sing and write songs.” I don’t want my kid calling me a rock boy. Or Lucy for that matter. “So, let’s find something for your teddy to wear that says he’s even cooler than a rock boy, okay?”

“What do those people wear?”

Ares pops up behind us. “I think those people wear casual clothes. Come on, I’ll help you find something really pretty for your little bear. Adults call it sensible.” He exaggerates his shudder to make Aurora laugh.

“There’s nothing wrong with wearing sensible clothing, Ares.” I turn to find Lucy walking up to me with a smile on her face.

I feel heat spreading all over my body as she looks me up and down.

“I should take you shopping. You have no idea how to dress normal. You don’t own a single article of clothing that doesn’t fit you like a glove.” She looks at Ares. “I’m going to take your brother to Sears to find him some clothes a dad would wear.”

“Sears?” I shake my head.

I won’t be caught dead in something from that place. “I’m a father, not a grandpa.”

“Yeah, you’re right. Sears isn’t the right place for a man like you.” She takes my hand, pulling me to come with her. “JC Penny’s is better for that sort of thing.”

Is this my life now?
