“I’m not about to let myself fall for him again.”

“So, you don’t feel anything for him?”

My mouth opens, but nothing comes out.

Looking at my reflection in the mirror, I shake my head. “I care about him. He is the father of my child. But nothing more than that. We both prefer it that way.”

“If you say so.”

“What’s that supposed to mean?” I don’t like her know-it-all attitude one bit.

“You’re telling me that Apollo wants nothing more than to co-parent with you?”

“That’s right. And I feel the same way.”

I know he wants more, but I see no reason to mess things up when they’re going so well.

“Sure, you do.”

“I do!” I say a little too loud. “I have no intention of trying to get back into the same relationship we had before.”

“Why is that? I mean, you said he’s been very good. Doing everything right. Being there for you and Aurora.”

“He is doing everything right. And I appreciate him.”

“But that’s all,” she says. “You appreciate him. You don’t have any attraction to him at all anymore.”

“Well, I wouldn’t say that. He’s still super-hot. And now that he’s being so good with our daughter, I see him in a different light. A highly attractive light. But I’m not going to do anything about that attraction.”

“So, you are attracted to him?”

“Well, yeah. He’s Apollo Reynolds. I mean, who isn’t attracted to him?” Biting my fingernail, I find this whole conversation a little stimulating. And that’s bad. “I need to go finish dinner. I wish you hadn’t brought this up, Lani. I can’t be thinking about him like that.”

“You do want him!”

“So what?”

I will not act on it.

Apollo

Trading high fives, me and the others in the band come off stage after putting on our second stellar show.

“What a night!” Amari shouts just before taking a bottle of liquor from one of the roadies. “Whew! It’s time to party!”

I’m riding a high purely on the fans’ reactions to our performance. Drinking has become something I just don’t need anymore. And I feel damn proud of that. “You guys have fun.” I head toward the dressing room to change out of my stage clothes.

Ty’s hand on my shoulder stops me, and I turn to find him grinning for some reason.

“You’re coming out with us tonight, Lo. And I’m not taking no for an answer.”

“Well, you’re going to have to because I’ve got plans to read my little girl a bedtime story. She’s waiting for me, and I’m not about to let her down.”

“Call her mom and tell her to read the damn story.” He is scowling and his hand is clawing my shoulder.

“No.” I remove his hand and turn back to walk to the dressing room.
