In the kitchen, I pull out my frying pan, then butter some bread before placing it in the hot pan.

“The mayor showed up at the interview and gave us the keys to the city.” A frown accompanies his words, which is odd.

“That’s not a good thing?” I ask, placing a couple slices of cheese onto one of the pieces of now toasty bread.

“It is a good thing. A great thing, really. I see it as people here taking our band seriously.” Leaning forward, he rests his elbows on the table, looking tense. “I believe in our talent. I know we’re doing better shows. And not drinking has helped. But the others don’t seem to give a shit.”

Smashing the sandwich to brown both sides of it, I sigh. “I don’t know what to say to make it better, Apollo.”

“I don’t expect you to know how to fix this, songbird. Hell, I’m not sure this is fixable.” He watches me with wide eyes as I bring a platter to the table.

“Soup and sandwiches, food for the soul.”

After I put the platter down, he takes my hand, then pulls me to sit on his lap.

“Thank you.” Brushing my hair away from my face, he kisses my cheek. “You’ve become my best friend since I came home.”

“You’ve become my best friend too.” I hug him tightly. And I mean every word of it. We are closer now than ever before.

When I pull back, I see something kind of shocking in his eyes — gratitude. “You saved me. Do you know that?”

“I might have saved you from drinking yourself to death,” I say. “But you saved me too. You made me see that Aurora really does need her daddy. And I need him too.”

“You need me?” A mischievous grin curves his lips, and his eyes dance. “Like, emotionally?”

With a nod, I answer, “Emotionally. Even physically. Like what we’re doing right now. I’m beginning to trust you.”

“You should trust me.” A deep chuckle makes his chest shake. “I’ve never been this trustworthy. You should take advantage of this unique opportunity.”

“I could never take advantage of you,” I tease him, grazing my lips against his. “Or could I?”

“I think you should.” His voice, raspy with lust, sends goosebumps pebbling my flesh.

Warmth blossoms between my thighs. “Is this a smart thing for us to do?” There’s still so much that I’m afraid of with him. He could still leave, go on the road with the band. And now that his band seems to hate me, blaming me for everything, I don’t think it’s a good idea that I go with him on the road.

But if I don’t, who will look after him?

His hands move up my sides, forcing my shirt up where he touches my bare skin.

My stomach tightens as things inside me begin to pulse. I’m getting lost in him faster than I imagined I would.

He hardens and grows beneath my thighs.

His breath is hot against my neck as he whispers, “I think it’s the smartest idea we’ve ever had in our lives.”

As my hands go down his back, my nails teasing him, one of his hands moves down my belly, to where I need it the most.

“Mommy, I’m awake.”

I close my eyes and touch my forehead to his. “Tell me that was only in my imagination.”

His deep sigh tells me that it was all too real.

His hands leave my body, and disappointment fills me as I climb off his lap. “The joys of parenthood.”

He smacks my ass just before I walk away from him. “There’s always later, Momma.”

Picking up Aurora to sit her on her booster chair at the table, I see her smile as she sees her daddy. “Daddy! You came back!”
