“I did. I had to see you again.” He looks at me out of the corner of his eye. “And your momma made some homemade soup I had to try.”

She claps her little hands. “I love soup!”

“They’re easy to please at this age.” I go to the kitchen to make her a bowl and go ahead and make one for me too. “We’re going to watch a Disney movie after dinner, Apollo. You should stay and watch it with us.”

“Movie! Mommy makes popcorn with chocolate and marshmallows,” Aurora says.

I don’t think it’ll take much to get him to stay, though. At least, I hope not. Not after the moment we had.

Apollo nods as he takes a bite of the soup. “Yummy. If the popcorn is as good as your momma’s soup, I’m staying for the movie.”

Placing the bowls of soup on the table, I sit down next to Aurora. “It’s warm, honey. Here, let me blow on it before you put it in your mouth.”

“That’s what she said,” Apollo teases me.

Rolling my eyes at him, I shake my head and smile. “Still with the dirty jokes. You haven’t changed much.”

“It’s who I am, songbird.”

Aurora’s head jerks as she looks at her father with big eyes. “Is Mommy your girlfriend again, Daddy?”

Quick to dismiss that idea, I pat her hand. “No, sweetie. It’s just Daddy being silly, that’s all.”

Apollo grins, looking at Aurora. “If I had a girlfriend, it would be your mommy. I can’t think of a better person to be my girl. Can you?”

“Me, me!” Aurora quickly says putting her chubby hands up. “I can be your girl, Daddy.”

“You are already my little birdie, pumpkin,” Apollo tells her.

Aurora’s huge proud smile makes us both laugh. But at least the embarrassing conversation seems to be over.

Later, as we lie on a blanket on the floor in front of the television, watching The Little Mermaid, Apollo runs his hand through Aurora’s curls.

“It makes you want your old hair back, doesn’t it?” I ask him.

“Kind of.” His eyes shine as he looks at me. “Should I do it?”

“Can you? I thought you said the label has control over your looks?”

He shrugs. “They make wigs.”

“They do. Of course, you’re already making some huge waves with the band. It might not be the best time to make more changes.” I see no reason to do anything to make a bad situation even worse.

“F them.” He moves to sit up, tension obvious by the way he holds his body.

Shaking my head, I move my head in gesture to our little girl. “I’m gonna make that popcorn now.” Getting up, I walk to the kitchen, then find him coming in behind me.

Sliding his hands around my waist, he moves his body flush against the back of mine. His words, hot in my ear. “I can’t stop wondering what would have happened had our daughter not woken up.”

“Me too.” Reaching up, I put the bag of popcorn into the microwave, then start it up.

Moving one of his hands around to the front of me, he eases it down lower and lower, very slowly toward the apex of my thighs. “Maybe I could hang out until she goes to bed for the night. She does sleep through the night, right?”

“She does.”

Oh god, just the feel of his chest against my back and his hands on me…

But is this the right next step for us? “Apollo, we should think about this before we do something we both might regret.”
