“I know I won’t regret it.” His lips press against the side of my neck. “I can make sure you won’t regret it either.”

“I didn’t mean that we would regret the actual act. I mean that we might regret moving our relationship from friendship to intimacy. Once you go that far, it’s impossible to go back to just being friends.”

“We’re more than just friends anyway,” he argues. “For one thing, we’re best friends. And for another, we’re parents to a wonderful little girl. And she would love it if we were a couple.”

Turning to face him, I have to be realistic. “But would your band like that? And don’t say F them. You guys already have a lot of bad blood going on right now. If they find out that we’re sleeping together, they’ll really believe that I’m controlling you. Not only by using our kid to get you to do what I want but by using my body too.”

Wiggling his eyebrows, he grins. “I can think of many ways that you could use your body to get me to do things. Things that you would enjoy very much. Things that would make your cute little toes curl while you scream out in ecstasy.”

My body grows hot and wanting.

And God, do I really want to fight this? This is all I’ve ever wanted. Ever since even before he left. I never stopped loving him, and now I have the chance to get it all.

Worst case scenario, I have this time to say goodbye.

Running one fingertip over his lips, which are way too close to mine, I whisper, “You make a very good case.”

“I do?” he asks with surprise. Then lowers his voice. “I mean, yeah, I do.”

“Your daughter has been asking for a sleepover with you. I think that might be a good idea. Wanna spend the night with us tonight?” I can no longer fight my attraction to him, and as monumentally bad of an idea it might be, I think we both deserve this night together.

“You bet your sweet ass I do.” Inching closer, his lips feather over mine.

Aurora begins to cry. “I threw up!”

“Um, maybe tonight is not the best idea. I should go.” He pulls away from me.

But I grab his arm. “You’re staying the night. But not for the reasons we were discussing earlier.”

“So, I have to be a real dad tonight, then?” He tries to look glum but wears a little smile anyway.

“It looks like you do.” We go together, hand in hand, to see to our little angel. “You gather her up and take her to the bathroom, while I clean this up.”

Picking her limp body up, he cradles her against his chest. “Is my little birdie feeling sick?”

“I am sick.” She lays her head on his shoulder. “Are you going to take care of me?”

“I’ll be here all night long, pumpkin. Daddy’s got you.” Kissing the top of her head, he looks at the mess I have to clean up. “This is going to be a long night, isn’t it?”

“One of the longest,” I let him know. “And we’ll both probably end up doing exactly what she just did. Most of the time when a kid throws up, it’s a virus that runs rampant through the family.”

“Awesome.” He carries her away, looking like the best daddy in the world.

In my eyes, anyway.

The night was excruciating.

My eyes are bloodshot from lack of sleep and the smell of vomit is overwhelming. Not much different than any other night was for me before I got sober.

At least I don’t have anything to do today. But Lucy still has work she has to get to.

Pulling on her uniform, she looks at Aurora who’s still sleeping in the middle of her bed. We all slept together in the queen-sized bed, and the littlest of us all took up the most room.

“I’ll call Lani to come over to watch her today. I know her usual babysitter won’t do it because she’s got kids, and she’ll be worried about spreading the virus. And daycare won’t let her come either.”
