I can barely breathe so I just nod, hating how easy it is for him to get me to do whatever he wants. I manage to croak out, “I’m not promising anything.”

“Except that you and I will get some alone time so we can talk, right?”

I smile, but I don’t commit.

“Cool.” Kissing the top of my head, he’s all smiles now that he thinks he got his way. “We’re about to go on. You ready to watch your man rock?”

My man?

I don’t know who he thinks he’s kidding. “Yeah, Lo. Go rock the house.”

Running his finger over my cheek, he smiles and nods. “I’ll do that for you, Lucy Bennet. And don’t call me Lo.”

He winks before heading to the stage.

The man is used to getting his way. It’s infuriating.

Yet, here I sit, like a good little girl, just like I used to way back then.

“Hello, Los Angeles!” he shouts into the microphone as he looks out at the crowd who chants his name.

Then he turns and looks at me, blowing me a kiss. “It’s good to be back home!”

The crowd goes insane, and the band begins playing their hallmark song that got them the big break they yearned for.

A song about home and how the hero fell in love with the girl next door, but their love was cut short when fame came calling.

Apollo wrote it before he even really knew me. So, as much as it sounds like our story, it really isn’t.

I always thought it was a premonition he must’ve had before the band got big.

As he plays and delights the fans, reality calls, or texts, really.

Lani: I hope you are having a great time. Enjoy your night.

Looking at Apollo on the stage, and his brother next to him, my heart breaks all over again.

This needs to be goodbye.

I get up and leave.

I never could compete with this new life he has anyway.

Apollo

Where the hell did she go?

With the set over, I leave the stage.

“Has anyone seen a woman wearing a sparkly jacket and heels to match, over black clothes? She’s average height and weight. Long, straight, dark hair and kind of emerald-green eyes.”

No one even looks at me.

I hold the folding chair up as I look around. “No one saw a gorgeous woman get out of this chair?”

Nothing! It’s like I’m not even talking.
