His driver.

“It is no bother, miss.”

The tenderness in Rhett’s eyes was my undoing, and I slipped inside the car. He closed the door behind me and walked to the driver’s seat. Slipping inside the car, he asked for my address, plugged it into his GPS, and pulled away from the curb.

Looking over at Rhett, I thanked him for offering me a lift home.

“There is no need to thank me. A woman as beautiful as you should always get home safely. Plus, it’s starting to get cooler, and there was no way I would leave you outside alone.”

I wouldn’t have noticed him glancing down at my dress as he spoke about the drop in temperature, if I hadn’t been looking straight at him while he was talking.

That was when I noticed how my nipples were perked and visible through my dress. Fuck. Could this get any more awkward?

Wrapping my arms around myself, I tried to warm my skin, but it was my internal temperature that went up a notch, and it had nothing to do with the warmth of the car or the alcohol in my veins.

For the second time that night, I was near Rhett Chambers, and my body responded to him like an eighteen-year-old girl meeting her favorite movie star.

What on earth had gotten into me?

He must have sensed my unease, and to my surprise, he broke the tension.

“So, did your friend have a good birthday?”

I laughed a little.

“Well, I’m sure her evening will be ending eventfully. She left with your brother. They hit it off. Who’d have thought it?”

It wouldn’t have been possible to put any more sarcasm in my voice.

“Oh, I see.” He shook his head. “I hope she knows what she’s gotten herself into?”

“What do you mean by that?”

I suddenly felt a sense of unease flood through me.

“Nothing that should worry you, it’s just… well… let’s just say my brother isn’t the easiest person to get on with.”

Now, that was an understatement.

“I’m guessing by that look on your face you agree with me?”

He flashed me his massive grin.

“Let’s just say your revelation about your brother’s character hasn’t exactly floored me.”

We both sat there and laughed.

It felt good.

“About tonight and…”

I knew he was going to talk about the kiss.

“Let’s just… chalk it up to the moment,” I said, hoping to bypass the whole issue.

Because I was not willing to go there.

That chapter of the night needed to get shelved and could be dealt with another day.
