Mentally, I shouted at myself, and without wanting to give this guy the satisfaction of knowing how much he turned me on, I gave him the smugest look that said, see, I know what I’m talking about.

Perspiration still clung to my skin, and a consistent buzzing continuously ran through my veins as I returned to the office, stopping only to grab my keys and bag that I’d chucked on the armchair in the corner of the office. Not a single part of me could understand why I had such a visceral reaction to him. Especially considering how cold and aloof he was, yet a fire burned in his eyes that drew me in like a moth to a flame.

Shaking myself out of this trance-like state, I decided to go out the back way to avoid another encounter. I’d parked my car in the back lot, which meant driving past the front doors to get onto the main street.

Despite my love of classic cars, I was never more grateful for my Audi A7 and its dark-tinted windows as I slowly passed the front, where I could still see my dad talking to the enigmatic stranger. I wasn’t precisely spying, more like my eyes were reeled in on the way his thighs filled his dark jeans, and don’t even get me started on his ass that looked like it’d been carved out of marble. I thought I’d gotten away with my ogling when I sensed him looking straight at me. And despite the tint of the windows, those aqua eyes pierced straight into mine.

I watched as Dad followed the guy’s line of vision and reached his hand out to wave me off. Lowering my window, I took a deep, steadying breath, smiled, and shouted to Dad.

“I’ll get a start on dinner. Let me know when you’re on your way.”

Just before pulling away, I glanced back over to the mystery man and felt the heat of his gaze right through to my bones. The corner of my mouth lifted slightly, and I raised my eyebrow, getting one last little game of cat and mouse, before putting my foot on the pedal and peeling out of there. As I glanced in my rearview mirror, I could see that he had turned, watching me leave, and despite the distance, I could have sworn I saw a smile on his face.

Chapter 2

Serena

The sweet and spicy smell of dinner made my mouth water, and at the same time, I heard my brother Roman’s stomach growl.

Lifting my bottle of Corona, I waited for Dad to take a seat.

“Cheers, and thanks for dinner. It smells divine.”

I toasted, clinking my bottle with Dad and Roman’s before diving straight in.

I was too busy devouring my food and not paying attention to the two of them, as they argued about some play or something that had happened in the football game over the weekend. Football was something the two of them could go on for hours about, especially given that the Green Bay Packers had signed Roman, but en route to training camp, he was hit head-on by a drunk driver who was never apprehended. Luckily, he survived the crash, but his shoulder was damaged severely, ending his football career instantly.

I was just about to tuck into my third smoked pulled pork sub when I heard my name mentioned, followed by Roman’s laugh.

“What’s so funny?” I muttered, knowing my dad always thought it funny that I loved demolishing my food.

“Ignore your brother. I was telling him about the guy that turned up at the garage yesterday and how impressed he was with your knowledge of cars.”

“He was probably worried you would mess up his car even more than it already was. Well, at least until you batted your lashes at him,” Roman quipped.

“Shut up. What are you, fifteen?” I retorted.

“Well, considering I’m ten months older, you kinda insult yourself too with that comment,” Roman teased and continued laughing, which made me want to go off on him further.

But before I could say anything, Dad gave me the look I knew all too well.

Serena, ignore him.

I don’t know why I let my brother rile me up like that, especially considering I was a successful lawyer who came top of my class at Columbia and was running my own firm at thirty-three. I didn’t even react to that extreme when I was in court.

Deciding it wasn’t an argument worth continuing, I picked up my plate and loaded it into the dishwasher.

“Dad, do you need me to help clean up? I think I’m gonna have an early night,” I offered.

Glancing over my shoulder, I caught the glare my dad shot Roman before looking over at me.

“No, sweetie, it’s fine.”

I walked back to the table and gave him a kiss on the head.

“Good night, Dad.”

“Good night, Serena.”
