That’s right; I was the one that set up this meeting weeks ago.

“Y-yes. I had some questions about the budget—”

“This year, the budget’s a bit tight.”Dr. Farris smiled and interlaced his fingers.

A knot tightened in my lower belly.

I crossed my legs. “…that’s a ‘no,’ then.”

“A ‘no’ for what?”

“An increase. We need supplies, travel money, entry fees for competitions—”

“I didn’t say no to that,” he said, holding my gaze with his cold eyes.

The knot in my lower belly squirmed around, reminding me it was there.

You want him to pin you down and look at you like that while he fucks you, what a little slut you are,my anxiety hissed.

I ignored it. “So, we can have an increase? Surely there’s somewiggle room—”

“Why do you think I had you close the door?” he said, a conspiratorial smile curling on his face.

Like he was making some kind of exception for me, butonlybecause it was me.

Like I was special.

For the first time in a long time, I felt noticed.

I felt important.

My good judgment receded.

He blinked and looked down at the neat stacks on his desk. “Can’t have the admins gossiping about this, too.”

“They’ll gossip either way if the door’s closed,” I blurted out.

His eyes shot to mine.

I recrossed my legs.

heat rose in my cheeks.

Did I affect him?

Oh God, this was so unprofessional...

But still, this…banteror whatever made me feel powerful. It was addicting; a temptation I wasn’t strong enough to resist yet. Not so soon after Grayson broke my heart and took my power away, anyway.

And it was a power I needed to feel, desperately.

Sawyer looked just as bored and in control as always.

It made me want to try harder.

He cleared his throat as if nothing happened—because nothingdidhappen—and rotated one of the papers on his desk. “Here’s what we’re working with.”

I leaned forward and got a whiff of his cologne. It flew through my nostrils and swirled through my mind, poisoning my judgment.
