Don’t look at him, don’t look at him, don’t look at him…
I looked at him.
Sawyer’s eyes flashed with dark desire. His voice came out low and hard. “Stop doing that.”
“Doing what?”
His lips parted ever so slightly as he looked at me.
Even though he was my boss, the way he was looking at me now made me feel like a woman—no, agoddess. I was unstoppable, invincible, and he was nothing but a mortal man.
The trembling sparkler of anxiety in my gut shifted colors into a chromatic firework of excitement.
My anxiety seized the wheel.
I leaned forward and pressed my lips to his.
My heart thundered against my ribcage as I raced down my therapist’s hallway to my emergency appointment.
“You’ve crossed the line, Grace.”
Sawyer’s words echoed through my memory and coagulated into globs of fear.
Why had I kissed him?
Why?!
His face… it was so close I could see each segment of stubble; the dashes on a two-lane road letting me know it was safe to pass. His eyes had that unmistakable dark hunger in them. It seemed like a good idea at the time…
Why the hell did I think that was a good idea!?
The thought of losing my job wound around my ribcage like barbed wire, cutting me as it squeezed. The fear amassed in my mind as I tried to breathe, but it was a losing battle. The corners of my vision had already started to speckle with those suffocating white blobs.
I reached for the golden doorknob and paused.
Voices murmured inside.
I must have been slightly early—overlapped on someone else’s appointment.
The realization jerked me out of my racing thoughts.
I let out a hissing breath through my nose.
Breathe in, breathe out.
Everything slowed down.
I was early. On time. Everything was organized; orderly.
Under control.
Sweet relief.
I walked a few paces from the door to give the other patient some privacy and leaned against the wall.
Even comingthatclose to an anxiety attack sapped me of all energy. I needed somewhere to sit.
To punish myself in private for what I’d done.
