“I’m in love with you.”

The rubbing stopped.

“You’re… What?”

I looked into his eyes. I had to see what was in them. “I’m in love with you. Have been for the past six months. I’ve been trying to tell you, but every time I found the courage, you were dating someone new. And then I had to re-evaluate my feelings for you, in case they were ‘the one’. I would never put you in the position to choose between them or me.

“And I didn’t get laid by anyone last night, except my fingers, and my showerhead this morning. I came so hard while thinking about you. You are all I think about. I want us to give us a chance. I know we’d be great together—”

“Hey, Brett! Sorry I’m late.”

I looked up to find a petite woman with curly hair, conservative clothing, and her handbag perched high up on her shoulder. Her smile made me want to smile back at her. But how did she know Brett?

“Lauren,” he said her name like he’d forgotten she was coming. “I’m glad you could make it.” He stood, breaking our contact and gave her a kiss on the lips.

“Lauren, this is Sam. Sam, Lauren…my girlfriend.”

No. Fucking. Way.

I would have remembered Lauren. I remembered all his girlfriends, dates, and one night stands.

“Hi Lauren.” I tried to smile. I really did. “Here, take my seat. The place is packed and you look hungry.” Actually she looked skinny. Not Brett’s taste at all. But who was I to judge? “I have work to do. It was lovely meeting you.”

I picked up my handbag and hightailed it out of there.

Leaving my heart behind.
