Meanwhile, my jaw slackens.

Do I love Alex?

Sure, I’ve got some serious feelings for the guy, feelings that go way deeper than simple attraction. Do I blush at the mere mention of his name? Do I think about him day and night? Do I feel incredible in his presence, as though together, we could do anything?

The answer to all my questions is yes.

It’s true when I say I've never met anyone like him in my life. I find myself thinking about him all the time, wanting to be with him, and then, when we are together, I never want it to end.

Alex has touched my heart in a way no man has before. If that's not love, I don't know what is.

The realization blooms inside like a beautiful rose, warmed by the sun.

I love him. I’m in love with him.

I sit with it for a beat. I love Alex.

I lift my eyes to Chloe’s, my heart expanding in my chest.

She’s watching me closely, a look of wonder on her face. “Oh, girl. You are in deep.”

I let out a giddy laugh. “I am.” My voice cracks and tears spring to my eyes. I cover my mouth with my hand, in shock.

Chloe raises her own hand in the air as though she’s in class. “I get to be your maid of honor.”

I let out a surprised laugh. “One step at a time, Chlo. I’ve just barely figured out I’m in love.”

“Ma’am?” Vladimir says after knocking on my bedroom door. “His Royal Highness, Prince Alexander is here. He has requested an audience with you.”

Chloe and I share a look before she lets out an excited squeal, clapping her hands together like one of those cymbal-holding monkey toys.

“Chill, okay?” I warn her.

“Totally chill,” she confirms, looking anything but. “Don’t you want to get dressed first?”

I glance down at my robe. “Dang it!”

I dash to my closet to find something to wear. I throw on the first dress I find—a pale yellow shirt dress with cap sleeves—slide my tennis shoes onto my feet and run a brush through my hair.

“How do I look?” I ask Chloe, excitement pinging around my stomach.

“Like a woman in lurve.”

“You’re cornier than a country song,” I say as I head to the door.

“I’m not the one in love,” she calls out as I close the door behind me.

Vladimir heralds Alex into the living room. The sight of him makes my heart leap into my throat. He’s wearing a white polo shirt tucked into a pair of chinos, with brown leather riding boots with black trim. He looks as good as he did at the polo match, and for a second, I cannot believe that last night I got to kiss this man in the most romantic setting ever.

“Hey, you,” I say.

“Hello, Maddie,” he replies with a smile that makes my belly flip.

Vladimir closes the door behind him, and Alex and I are left alone.

“We need to talk,” he says, and instantly my stomach is in a knot. Did he wake up this morning and realize kissing me last night was a big mistake?

He looks nervous when he says, “Last night was?—”
