A night that changed my whole world.

“What?” I ask, my heart thudding in my ears.

His shoulders drop. “Look, I’m no good at this.”

“Not good at what, exactly?” I ask slowly, wondering if I even want to hear his reply.

He presses his lips together. “I’ve known women in my life. Some would say too many.”

I blink at him. Where is he going with this?

“This is not easy for me.”

I brace myself. “Just say it, Alex. Get it over with.” My voice is steely.

He shoots me a worried look. “All right. Since you asked, I wanted to let you know that?—”

I scrunch my eyes shut. This is going hurt.

“—I’ve never felt this way about anyone before.”

I open my eyes to gawk at him. He’s got such a look of vulnerability I want to close the distance between us and wrap my arms around him in reassurance.

The thudding of my heart in my ears is almost too loud to bear. “You haven’t?”

The intensity in his eyes as they land on mine tells me that what he felt for me last night was more than just a passing attraction to a member of the opposite sex. It meant something.

Something real.

Something big.

Slowly, he shakes his head. “I want to be a hundred percent honest with you. A part of me thinks this is going way too fast, but the other part of me? That part is telling me to rush straight in with you, boots and all.”

He’s the one to close the distance between us, and he reaches out and slides his hand into mine. The feeling of his flesh against mine sends a shiver through me.

“What kind of things?” I ask tentatively.

“All of it. Getting to know you better, spending time with you, sharing your world. Showing you mine.” He pauses before he adds, “Some more of that spectacular kissing we did last night.”

I bite my lip. “Spectacular kissing?”

“Tell me you didn't feel it, too. The thing between us. It’s…powerful.”

I want to punch the air, perform a series of cartwheels, break into an ecstatic dance routine, all at once. Of course that’s probably physically impossible, but wow, do I wish I could do it.

“I feel it, too,” I say, a smile claiming my face.

He beams back at me. “Good. Great.”

I can hear the nerves in his voice, and it tells me how much he cares for me. A man like Alex isn’t tense around women. A man like Alex is self-assured and in control. But around me, it would seem, he’s like a nervous teenage boy—and it makes me love him all the more.

“I’m leaving to return to Ledonia with my family later today. If you can, I’d love to spend as much of my remaining time here with you as possible.”

“I'd love that.”

We're like a couple of goofy kids, holding hands and grinning at one another.

“Good, because I need you to change. I want to show you something, and a dress won’t cut it.”
