“But you are right in your analysis—it really is over unless we can counter that testimony. And Drucker looks respectable and her story is plausible enough for the jury to believe her. But we know she’s lying because we know Pearl was not on that bus.”

Jack jerked up. “Donny found out why Tyler Dobbs was lying.”

DuBose shot him a hopeful glance. “So maybe he can find the same about Drucker?”

Jack called Peppers and explained the situation. “As soon as you can, Donny.”

He put the receiver down. “He’s on it. But if he can’t find anything, what then?”

DuBose abruptly stood, looking excited. “Can I borrow your car?”

“Sure, but where are you going?”

“To run down a hunch.”

“You want company?”

“You better stay here in case Donny calls back.”

“Okay.” He tossed her the keys and DuBose rushed out.

Two hours later, a car pulled up in the Lees’ driveway. Jack thought it was DuBose but it turned out to be Donny Peppers in the Corvette.

“You are in luck, Jack,” said Peppers as he got out of the vehicle.

“I could use some luck right now.”

He handed Jack a sheaf of papers. “Linda Drucker. That will make interesting reading.”

“Thanks.”

“Wait, there’s still more.”

“Okay,” said Jack expectantly. “You have been a busy man.”

“I finally found the blue convertible. It’s the only one actually registered in Freeman.” Peppers pulled out a copy of the registration and a photo of the car. “You can show it to Jerome, see if he can ID it.”

“Thanks,” said Jack, his enthusiasm dimming.

“What?” said Peppers.

“To get it into evidence, I have to put him on the stand. And if I do that, Battle will rip him apart.”

“I see your dilemma, but it might be worth it.”

Jack looked at the car registration. “Walter Gates? Curtis Gates’s son?”

“Yep.”

“We met him at the reading of the will. What the hell was he doing at the Randolphs’ house that day?”

When DuBose returned she was looking immensely pleased. She told Jack where she had gone, whom she had met with, and what she had found out.

“Damn, Desiree, how did you think of that angle?”
