“Desperation, it’s a great motivator.”

He then informed her about what Donny Peppers had unearthed.

“So Curtis Gates’s son was over at the Randolphs’ that day?” she said.

“And we need to find out why. Give me the car keys.”

She handed them to him. “Where are you going?”

“We’re going to Curtis Gates’s house.”

As they were heading to the Fiat, they saw Jeff climbing out of a Jaguar. Driving it was Christine Hanover. After she pulled away Jack walked up to his brother.

“Jeff, come on, what are you doing out with Christine?”

“We just went for coffee. To catch up. And she wanted to talk.”

“Well, I hope that’s all.”

“What’s that supposed to mean?” retorted Jeff.

“I just don’t want you to get hurt.”

“By havin’ a cup of coffee with an old friend?”

“You know exactly what I’m talking about,” said Jack, growing angry.

“I’m a big boy, Jack. I can live my own life.”

“Do I have to kick your ass to make you see straight like when we were kids?”

Jeff looked him over. “No disrespect, big brother, but you couldn’t kick my ass now with two other guys helpin’ you.”

“Is that right?” barked Jack, his fists balled.

“Yeah, that’s for damn sure right,” his brother barked right back.

DuBose got in between them and said, “Act your age, and park your male egos. Nobody is kicking anybody’s ass unless it’s me knocking you two idiots on yours.”

Jack unclenched his hands and stepped back. “Like you said, it’s your life, Jeff. I guess you can go ahead and screw it up if you want.” He stalked off to the Fiat.

Jeff glared at DuBose. “What the hell is his problem?”

“He just got you back and he’s terrified he’ll lose you again.”

Jeff walked into the house and slammed the door.

DuBose took a deep breath.

Boys.

CHAPTER 83

THE DRIVE TO CURTIS GATES’S home took about twenty-five minutes. He lived in an area that was upscale, but not in the price range of the Hanovers’.

“How’d you know where his house was?” asked DuBose as they drew to a stop several homes down from the substantial two-story painted-white brick house. Parked in the front circular drive was a blue convertible.

“The son lives with his father; the address was on the copy of the car registration Donny gave me.”
