“I was able to get to you with relative ease, Isabella. Daniel had men looking for you for a month, and then he died, but I was able to send men to find you in no time at all. Your husband didn’t know of Daniel’s death, I’m sure, before he sent you out to shop. If you ask me, he was trying to get rid of you.”

I know better than that and refuse to let her get to me. “Let’s pretend for a moment that I mean nothing to my husband. What I might be carrying inside me will matter. If I die, and he finds out that I was carrying his unborn child, what will happen to you is beyond my imagination.”

Her eyes move to my stomach. “You think you’re pregnant?”

I can see that means something to her. “I do.”

“You and he have been married a month. You can’t be sure about that yet.” Her eye twitches a little.

“I’m never late, and I was due to start yesterday. It’s possible that I’m pregnant. We’ve been trying as hard as humanly possible to start our family.”

The reason I mentioned the idea of not having children until I was out of danger to Carlo was because I was worried about my period being late. When I woke up yesterday without any sign it was about to start, I couldn’t help thinking about the possible consequences if something happened to me.

And now it has.

Chapter 19

Carlo

In a meeting with my closest advisers, we’re working on the plan to get my wife out of the Barone mansion when my cell rings. Too busy to take a call right now, I toss it to one of my assistants.

He answers, “Carlo Vietti’s phone. What can I do for you?”

I run my finger over the blueprint of the mansion. “My inside guy should be getting back to me soon to let me know where my wife is. But my bet is on her being in the least used and least populated area of the home. That could be the basement.” I run my finger over the basement area on the blueprint. “Or the attic, like we talked about earlier today.”

“You know where she is?” asks the man who answered my phone.

“Is that my eye inside on the phone?”

He nods. “She’s in the attic. He saw Barone’s widow and the man she claims to be her uncle coming out of a small door at the end of a hallway on the top floor.” He listens for a moment, then adds, “The two of them were talking about how this is almost over, how they can finally be together, and how their facade of being relatives is about to be over for good.”

None of their personal shit matters to me. Except for the fact that the Darius fucker is now on my list of who pays for taking my wife. And that’s a list no motherfucker should want to be on. “Okay,” I say as I look at the men in the room, “you guys know that asshole’s head is on the chopping block.”

“We’ll be moving in soon,” my guy tells my eye on the phone. “We’ll go with the car bomb, so steer clear of the ground floor. Be available to show us where the package is located. We want to do this fast and without incident or injury.”

With the call, we now know where my wife is, and the plan can be put into action. “Time to move. You all know what to do, and I expect this to go without a hitch. Operation Get Her Home is in effect.”

As we all walk out of my office and head down the hallway, I spot my mother. Her eyes are full of worry, and as soon as I get to her, she asks, “What’s going on?”

“I’m bringing her home.” Kissing her on top of the head, I give her my best smile. “She’ll be here in no time.”

She clasps her hands together as if in prayer. “Thank you.”

“Throw in a prayer for an easy operation while you’re at it.” I move on, wanting to get this thing going. “See you soon.”

My driver pulls out, following a couple of other cars. Night has fallen, and that means no one will see us coming.

I call my inside guy back to hear for myself what he knows about my wife’s whereabouts.

“Talk to me,” I say.

“I’m on the top floor right now. There’s a small door at the very top of a narrow set of stairs that I think lead to the attic.”

“Can you get up there to make sure that’s where my wife is?”

“I’ll make it happen, boss.”

My men talk among themselves, making plans, as I wait to see if he can get in.
