I hear some rattling. “The door’s locked,” my inside eye says. “I have something that might get me in.”

“We’re on the way. You need to be able to get out of there fast once the shit hits the fan. Having her already with you when it’s time to go would make me a happy man.”

The car speeds around a sharp corner with no headlights on. Staying unseen is key. Brake lights ahead prompt my driver to slam on his brakes. “Fuck!” he shouts.

“Go around ’em!” one of my guys shouts. “Just floor it!”

“Damn. I can’t get it to unlock,” my inside guy tells me. “Hang on—I hear a knocking sound.” He’s quiet for a moment. “Isabella, are you in there?”

“Come on, baby. Let us know you’re in there,” I say as I stare into the darkness ahead.

“I hear something,” he says. “It’s muffled. It has to be her. I’m going to keep trying. I’ll call you if I make it in and get her out.”

“You’ll hear it all go down in a few minutes.” I end the call, looking around to make sure everything is as it should be.

“That’s the alley behind their place,” the driver calls out. “You guys ready?”

More than ready to get this thing done and over with, I give a nod. The men have the plan memorized and are ready to implement it. I take a deep breath as the car slows. Many of my men have already arrived, surrounded the house, and drawn their guns.

Chaos is key, and my guys are about to create a shit-ton of it. The bomb goes off, and flames shoot from the car, lighting up the darkness. Alarms go off as all hell breaks loose.

People pour out of the mansion, and at the same time, my men move into the opening created by the bomb. Part of the structure catches fire from the blaze, and I feel the need to speed things up.

Calling my man inside, I say, “Tell me you got her.”

“I haven’t gotten in yet. I can already smell the smoke though. I can tell we don’t have much time.” I hear rattling sounds and some cursing. “Fuck, these motherfuckers sure know how to make a lock.”

People are running everywhere, and I know I need to go in. I can’t sit here and depend on anyone else. “I’m going in,” I let one of my men know just before I get out of the car.

He jumps out to follow me. “Boss, let me go instead!”

“You keep the motor running. I want to get the fuck out of here as soon as I have her.” I turn to make sure he does as I say and watch as he gets back into the driver’s seat. I can’t let anything go wrong now. I have to get her out, and I need to do it yesterday.

I move through the mansion, staying close to the walls as I get my inside man back on the phone. “Where am I going?”

“Damn, you came in by yourself, huh? Didn’t see that coming. Anyway, you came in the back, right? From where I heard the explosion?”

“Yes.” Smoke fills the air, making it hard to breathe.

“Okay, there are stairs off that hallway. Come up them,” he directs.

I can barely make out the stairs as the smoke is already getting thick. Once I find them, I go quickly and then ask, “I’m up. Now where?”

“To the right. Come all the way down.” I can hear him coughing and know the smoke is thick where he is as well, and that means Isabella is probably being affected by it too.

I hear some muffled sounds on his end of the line. “Is that Isabella?”

“It sounds like it might be,” he says.

“Tell her I’m almost there.” I move fast, knowing there’s little time left.

He coughs. “The smoke is getting really heavy up here.”

“Rip off a piece of your shirt and hold it over your mouth to help filter the smoke.” I can hardly see through the smoke in the darkness. “I’m at the end of this hall.”

“Okay, there’s a small door. Feel your way to it. The narrow staircase should be there if you’re at the right place.”

“Has she answered you yet?” I ask as I pull the door open and see the narrow steps he talked about.
