“No. I don’t think she can hear me. She’s probably not in the room on the other side of this door but in a room beyond that. At least that’s the way it sounds.”

Making my way up the narrow staircase, I hear odd sounds coming from the wall. “What the hell is that?”

When I get to the top, I see my guy. “Sir, I hear shouting coming from inside. I think another woman is in there with her now too. But how she got there, I don’t know.”

“I heard something as I was coming up. Probably a passage through the top of a closet. I need to get this door open fast. You get the hell out of here.”

“Are you sure you don’t need my help?” he asks, his eyes darting back and forth.

“I’ve got this.”

With a nod, he takes off, and I point my gun at the doorknob and fire, blowing the locking mechanism to oblivion. The sounds of the alarms going off all over the place mask the sound of the gun and me kicking in the door.

I can hear the murmur of voices, both male and female, coming from the other side of yet another door. The closer I get, the louder the voices get.

“Call off your dog!” I hear a woman say. I assume it’s Vivian Barone.

“I don’t know who you’re talking about!” I hear Isabella shout. “Let me out of here, Vivian! This place is on fire. We’re all going to die if we stay here.”

A man shouts, “You’re not getting out of here!”

The fuck she’s not.

“Just unlock the fucking door,” Isabella shouts.

Then I hear lots of footsteps, and it sounds to me like they might be scuffling.

“Stop!” the man screams. “Just stop!”

“Stop! I’m not letting you out, Isabella,” Vivian shouts. “Use my phone to call your husband and tell him to stop this right now.”

“Your fucking house is on fire, you stupid bitch!” Isabella cries out. “He can’t stop what’s already happened. We need to get the fuck out of here. I don’t want to burn alive. Do you?”

“She’s right,” the man says. “We have to leave. Come on.”

“If we leave, she’ll get out,” the woman says. “I can’t let her get away.”

“We will all die!” Isabella says.

I kick the door, and it won’t budge. No one seems to hear it from the inside.

If I take a shot at the doorknob, the bullet might end up going through and hitting my wife. I can’t take that chance. But I know it’ll take me a while to kick the door in.

Leaning against the wall, I close my eyes and try not to choke on the thick smoke. I have to get to my wife. That’s all that matters.

I try to take a breath, but nothing happens. I’ve inhaled too much smoke.

I don’t have time for this shit!

Chapter 20

Isabella

What’s that?

Three knocks on the door make me step way back, feeling the need to take cover. I have no idea what’s on the other side of the door, but it sounds like it’s about to burst through.

Darius is trying to drag Vivian back to the trap door they came through, but she’s fighting him. Then something erupts—a blast of orange and yellow sparks and a sound so loud my hands instinctively cover my ears. I duck down by the side of the bed.
