Her gasp is barely audible, her hand flying to her mouth in shock. “But what if something goes wrong?” she whispers, her voice trembling. “What if I get caught or, worse, killed?”

I swallow hard, the weight of her fear pressing down on me like a lead weight. “I won’t let anything happen to you, Lisa,” I vow, my voice firm and determined. “You’re not going to get killed on my watch.”

Leaning in, I kiss her lips tenderly, my heart pounding with the silent promise of protection. “You’re stronger than you realize,” I murmur against her skin. “Just do as I say, and we’ll both make it out of Roxbury alive with more power than you’ve ever imagined.”

As she nods in reluctant agreement, I feel a surge of pride mixed with apprehension, which I try to mask as best as possible. I kiss her on the forehead.

“Sleep now. It’s going to be a long day tomorrow,” I say.

My phone buzzes on the nightstand beside me, signaling an incoming call. With a sigh, I pick it up and glance at the caller ID. It’s Enzo. I stand up slowly and walk into the adjoining parlor of the suite.

“Hey, Enzo,” I answer, my voice heavy with fatigue.

“How are you holding up?” Concern is evident in Enzo’s voice.

“Hanging in there,” I reply. “Just trying to take things one step at a time.”

“Can’t sleep?” Enzo asks.

“No, you?”

“Same.”

“I figured,” I respond, letting out a nervous sigh.

Enzo pauses before asking, “Have you discussed the details with Lisa?”

I nod, even though he can’t see me. “Yeah, we went over everything just now. She’s on board.”

“That’s good to hear,” Enzo says, sounding relieved. “You know how important it is that she understands the plan.”

I know all too well. Lisa’s involvement in this operation is crucial, and I can’t afford any mistakes. “Don’t worry, Enzo. She knows what’s at stake.”

There’s a brief silence before Enzo speaks again, his voice low and serious. “I’m sorry to have to spin this on you. I know she’s the last person you want to do this with.”

He’s right, but I don’t want to dwell on the subject. Besides, this can’t be why Enzo called. He isn’t the most empathetic guy.

“So?” I ask.

“Oh, I called because I have some news for you, Frank.”

My heart rate quickens as I brace myself for whatever he’s about to say. “What is it?”

“The bomb has been prepared,” Enzo says. “It’ll be sent to your hotel room very early tomorrow morning—along with the flower Lisa is supposed to bring along.”

I take a deep breath. This is the moment we’ve been waiting for. “Got it,” I say, my voice steady despite the swirling emotions coursing through my veins. “Thanks, Enzo. We’ll be ready.”

“Good luck,” he says. “And be careful.”

“I will. See you on the other side.”

With that, we say our goodbyes and end the call. I set my phone back down on the nightstand and lean back against the pillows, anticipation building in my stomach.

I find myself grappling with a tumult of emotions. Relief mingles with anxiety and excitement battles apprehension. The weight of our mission bears down on me like a leaden cloak, threatening to crush me beneath its suffocating embrace.

I sit in the dim light of the massive living room, the silence broken only by the soft hum of the air conditioner. Everything looks calm and peaceful, but within, I’m anything but calm. My mind races with a thousand thoughts, fears, and doubts. What if something goes wrong tomorrow? What if Lisa gets hurt? What if . . .

I shake my head, trying to banish the thoughts that threaten to overwhelm me. I can’t afford to dwell on what-ifs. I have to focus on the task, ensuring that tomorrow goes off without a hitch.
