Blood spewed freely from his wound. He charged the other immortal. In a tangle of wings and bodies, they hurtled through the sky, tumbling downward.

Landing would hurt like a sonofabitch.

Once he crashed, Indigo dashed to Roark’s side. His eyelids fluttered. They closed.

She set her ear to his heart where it still beat strong. Good. She hoped it stayed that way because when he came to, she planned to introduce him to the full force of a ticked-off witch.

But she was unable to hang onto her anger, tears sliding from her eyes.

****

Ohngel’s hand twitched when moisture dropped onto it. He flipped open one lid. Then the other. His dark-haired witch was crying.

He winced as he rose on his elbows. With his thumb, he caught her tears.

While he stared at the tears, the impossible happened. Blood charged through every vessel in his body. His chest expanded. Oxygen burst into his lungs. His pulse pounded like a damn jackhammer in his ears. His brain had a single focus.

Indy.

The timing sucked. The location sucked. But it was what it was. Besides, he wouldn’t change it, even if he could. It was simply another glorious insanity she aroused in him. Legends told of immortals who bonded for eternity. No one believed the tales. But Ohngel had the proof. He recognized he’d been fighting the call since he’d met her by the river. Until Gabriel’s strike to the chest and the fall from the sky weakened him. Now he accepted Indy into his heart.

So be it. But it was time to return to the matter at hand.

As he pushed to his knees, he levered himself into a full-on stand. “I need a sword.”

“You need a healer, dumbass,” said Indy.

He bent close, seizing her lips in a passionate kiss, his arm coiled around her waist. When he drew back, words popped from his mouth. He had bonded with Indy whether she wanted him or not. “Is that any way to talk to your mate?”

She stared, her eyes wide. “Are you proposing? If so, it’s lame.”

“It’s the best I can do in the moment. I’m a tad preoccupied with saving the world.” He brushed aside his thoughts because his half of the mating was a done deal. He was linked to Indy for eternity. What remained was for her to accept him.

But Gahya and Gabriel were his mission now. Ohngel glanced around the battlefield. The combatants on the ground gawked at the immortals, seemingly content for the time-being to let them fight it out.

Indy shook her head while blowing out an exasperated breath. “You’ll need my help. You can hardly stand. I doubt you’re up to swinging a sword.”

“I’m immortal.”

“You’re a pain in the butt.”

Gabriel, his fall cushioned by a tree and bushes below it, stumbled to his feet with Gahya’s aid. He retrieved his fallen sword, favoring an injured leg, a hand to his ribs, his flesh mottled with bleeding cuts.

Gahya shook out her scorched, tattered wings. “Come home with me, Ohngel. Return to my bed. Old times were good.”

Ohngel amassed energy, letting it ripple through his body to broadcast his power. Every wound closed. Every bone knitted together. His fiery feathers snapped from his spine.

Shouting to Gahya, Indigo touched his shoulder. “He’ll smoke your fat ancient ass with me as his faithful sidekick.”

Roark sighed. “Stay behind me, female.”

“Shut up.” She caressed his cheek. Neither the fire nor the electricity rippling on the surface of his skin harmed her. “I’m damn tired of you telling me what to do. If you think I’ll let my mate get away with such nonsense, you’re stupider than you look.”

“So you accept my lame proposal?”

“Obviously.”

“What’s going on?” asked Gahya, a frown creasing her forehead as she glared at them, her damaged wings dragging in the dirt.
