Gabriel shifted his stance, moaning from his injuries.

Before Ohngel could answer, Indigo’s knees buckled. She swayed, but he caught her before she tumbled onto her rear.

“A warning would have been nice,” said Indy.

Despite the circumstances, he grinned. Their rapid connection had obviously unnerved her. He had offered to mate. She accepted. They were bound. Though their union was new, it was strong. He spoke to her thought to thought. Your laces are untied.

Her eyes widened. Did you just talk to me without moving your lips?

Yes. He winked. Another anomaly to consider later.

While a weakened Gahya inched toward them, Indigo held up her hand, saying, “Can you give us a minute?” She turned to Ohngel. Are you always gonna be in my mind? ‘Cause I think you could get annoying.

Only when you want me there.

He ceased their private conversation when Kole moved up on his right. “This is our fight, too, Roark or whoever the fuck you are. You don’t get all the fun. Together, we’ll kick immortal butt. Let’s make it fast, though. Arisen Dawn is re-energized.”

“We’re here,” said Matty Garcia, backed by a battalion of Rangers, more forces gathering behind them.

Rein pulled up with Braelyn, Ram, Denim, Chay, and Margo. “You’re not going to hog the glory.”

Chay jacked a bolt into his chu-ko-nu. “I’m here to save your fire-winged immortal patootie.”

Ohngel looked to his far left where he spied Miller and Galena, Nico and Sabine, Brak and Harley, Jace and Tyr, Dax and Chiara. Kole’s other warriors filled in the ranks.

Celene stepped forward with Nace’s Firebrands, her hand stroking a fierce, snarling cat. The Encampment stronghold banged weapons on their shields, Jarek a funnel of smoke alongside Lizette.

Scion Firebrands, American soldiers, and those who had chosen sanctuary during Arisen Dawn’s raids crowded into the field around him.

Indigo turned to her gryphon. “What’s that you say, Oskar? The immortal A-holes are outsmarted, outnumbered, outmaneuvered, and outsparkled? Right you are.” She faced Gahya again. “You, you old hag, take your overused twat home. This male’s taken.” She cocked one jaunty foot across the other, toe into the dirt. With her arm looped over Ohngel’s shoulder, she jutted out her hip.

He kissed the top of her head. “You have a way with words, my Indy.”

“A touching scene. Humans joined with Aeternals against their creators. We made you. We can unmake you.” Gahya drew back her hand.

Ohngel was moved by those who supported him. They could have waited to let him handle the problem. But that wasn’t who they were. “Do not do this, Gahya. I will end your immortality. Today. On this spot.”

“You wouldn’t dare. Only the OneCreator can issue that order.” She glanced over her shoulder at Gabriel, who nodded.

“Accidents happen.” Ohngel signaled Indy to give him space. When she did, he wrapped himself in storm clouds. His fiery wings drew lightning to them like a magnet. His feathers crackled with energy. He threw back his head and roared. To mute the sound, hands clapped to ears as the Feard assassin prepared to end the lives of two immortals.

His body consumed by power, Roark issued one last warning. “Gahya, Gabriel, return to Vast and the gaming room. Live to fuck, frolic, and fritter away your days.”

A smile which held no appeal for Ohngel teased Gahya’s lips. “Come with me. We had such good times. We can again. I know just what you need.”

He fixed on Indigo, his words raging like a blast from a furnace. “What? No snappy comeback?”

“I trust you to handle princess pain-in-the-ass.”

Gahya floated toward his witch. “You couldn’t possibly want this…”

“Could. Do,” he bellowed. “Now, what’ll it be? True death or Vast? I won’t ask again. I no longer care what the OneCreator wants. A male who doesn’t fear the future is indeed scary.”

As though she finally realized Ohngel’s resolve, Gahya slid a hand through Gabriel’s cocked arm. “Come. All this bloodshed bores me.”

When they disappeared, he doused his angry flames. Facing the warriors who stood with him, he awaited questions or smart-assed comments.

Kole ground his teeth. Snarling, he said, “You might have dropped a hint, Roark. I fucking hate surprises. Firebrands, we have assholes to chase.”
