With one flick of the witch’s wrist, twenty gryphons rose at their backs. “My guys adore bird feathers. Bring it on, bright boy.”

Ohngel beamed with pride. Indy shouldn’t have been able to conjure in Vast, but she had. Using him as the source for her spells, apparently, increased her powers.

“I like her,” said Michael. “Perhaps you should teach her some restraint.”

Ohngel laughed, deep and throaty. “Tried. Failed miserably.”

Michael’s wings flared out. “The OneCreator’s pissed with you, Ohngel. You stuck your nose where it didn’t belong. You interfered with Gabriel and Gahya’s creatures.”

Michael snapped his fingers. The gryphons disappeared.

Indigo frowned.

“Back to your nose in the wrong business, Ohngel,” said Michael.

“You have a weak case.”

White light leaked from beneath Michael’s skin. “How so? Explain the Cambion?”

“I didn’t interfere so much as guide. He was already seeking a means to protect both species.”

“You prompted the warlock to sire a second bloodline.”

Ohngel shrugged. “I offered both sides a fighting chance.”

“What about the prophecy?”

“I fess to it. Penned it but used the OneCreator’s words for inspiration. Made up some.”

“Badly written.” Michael’s white wings shooshed open. Then they folded into his body again.

“Don’t be a critic, Michael. It was my first attempt at poetry.”

“The Firebrands? Custodes Templii? You saw to their creation.”

“The Cambion’s ideas.” He scrubbed a fist across his jaw.

“Pairing Blood Coven descendants with Firebrands, Ohngel?”

“Very iffy. I tweaked fate by bringing the offspring to the warriors. I never forced them to mate. It was their idea. Theirs alone.”

“Writing The Path, revealing the lives of immortals?”

“The Cambion wrote it from stories I told by the campfire to pass the night. No crime there.”

Michael propped his fists on his hips. “You joined Arisen Dawn to carry intel to the ylve Cadmon.”

“Kinda got me again. Still, I did not share everything. For example, I never revealed the locale of the garrison. I forced the Aeternals to earn that bit of knowledge.”

Indigo punched his shoulder.

Michael flared his wings. “When you found Blood’s Kiss, you put it into the hands of the Cambion’s Firebrand offspring.”

“You gave it to Alexander. He was your friend, a human you admired. Are you sure you didn’t interfere?”

A slow grin spread across Michael’s face. “Many eons ago, I hired a master Sumerian craftsman to forge it. Though he was human, he was a genius weapons maker. And you know how I admire a well-fashioned blade. It sat on my mantle until I gave it to a deserving warrior who wore it well. I want it back. But this isn’t about me.”

Ohngel didn’t miss Michael’s non-answer answer, though he chose to ignore it. “Technically, she located the sword.” He pointed at Indy, who waved. “I did pass it on to Rein. You got me there.”
