As he inched his fingers to the edge of her bra, his stormy gray eyes locked onto hers as if to judge her reaction. He stroked a finger under the lace trim.

When his lips curled into a cocky grin, she regained some of her wits, leveling him with a cool gaze and raised brow.

He retreated. “Your skin is lovely, silky.”

“I use lotion.”

His hand stroked her cheek, dropped to her chin, and caressed her necklace again. “How does this look on your bare flesh?”

She pushed against his chest with a groan. “Stop.”

The intruder’s tongue wet his full, luscious lips, his lids heavy with desire. “Stop what? Stop breathing? Stop talking? Stop seducing you?”

“Those are good starters.”

The male rolled away, lying with his arms crossed under his head, his eyes laughing. “I’m too much for you to handle.”

If her thundering heart was an indicator, he might be right. But she was no youngling unable to control her libido.

At her call, Oskar plowed through the brush, flopping his gigantic lion rump beside her. Her protector. He rotated his eagle’s head toward the stranger, his neck swinging in a wide arc, his mouth gaping to emit a small burst of fire.

The intruder chuckled, a raised hand blocking the flame. “Your conjured pet can’t stop me, witch.”

“I don’t need Oskar’s help.” Indigo sat up, flicking her wrist. As the air around them chilled, her nipples hardened and goosebumps scattered down her arms. She cast a spell to toss his royal arrogance into the river, clothed this time.

Instead, he caught it in his palm as if it were a small ball. Then he launched the spell into the grass. He flopped onto his back again, arms once more under his head.

Infuriating.

Indigo’s eyes widened, her brows arching. “You’re no shifter.” She scooted away from the intruder. “Oskar. Attack.”

After the gryphon lumbered to his feet, he vanished.

Poof.

The stranger blew across his hand. “I’m a shifter mix.”

“Don’t be ridiculous. Where is Oskar? Who are you?”

“He’s safe. Call him if you don’t believe me.” The interloper sat up faster than Indigo could track, gripping her chin between his thumb and forefinger. “I’m the conquering hero who’s going to breach the ridiculous shield you wrap around yourself. Then I’ll lift your colorful skirt to enjoy fucking you. Who are you?”

She swatted his hand. “Hmm. That sounds so romantic. Try it. I’m Indigo, the reader of the river, the incomparable finder of lost objects, witch extraordinaire, sister of Alarik, aunt of Rein, daughter of Tor and Adriana, madwoman, and quirky bitch.”

He chuckled, seemingly unimpressed. “Nice bio.”

“Who are you?”

“Your future lover. But I’ve outstayed my welcome today.” He burst to his feet, jamming on his boots.

“Outstayed? Your welcome never existed. I demand answers. Why are you here? If you screw with my river, I’ll end you.” After she rose from the ground, she touched her Pop-of-Pink toes to his booted feet.

He cocked his head to the side, dark clouds racing across his irises, his shirt still loose and revealing delicious bronze slabs of muscle. “Demands do not go over well with me, Indy. So no answers. As far as ending me, you are free to try. Besides, I have done nothing to harm you, witch of the fascinating resume. I came to refresh myself with a dip. Job done.” He waved a hand toward the river. “Tread with care, Indy. Water is a heavy burden.”

“No shit. Name’s not Indy. Now take your big balls and never return.” She pointed an angry finger toward the woods.

With a fist on her elbow, he tugged her close, mashing his bare chest against her thinly covered breasts. When she refused to retreat, he looped an arm around her, his hand dropping to cup her ass, drawing her in tighter. “But then you’d never see me or my boys again. I don’t think you want that to happen.”

His lips crushed hers in a savage kiss, licking the seam of her mouth until she opened for him. When his hand tangled in her hair, forcing her head back, her heart thudded in her chest. His tongue flicked in and out, tangling with hers, sucking, setting her on fire. He tasted of dark indulgence. Of decadent pleasure. Of vast power. Of far-away places. Of bloodletting and restraint. Of longing and sadness. She blinked. Of her future and destiny.
