Picking them up, she flung them at him.

The stranger jammed his feet through the legs of his jeans, sliding them up his rock-hard thighs. Neglecting the snap and zipper, he warned, “Don’t do it, witch.”

Having lifted her arm, preparing to wiggle her fingers, Indigo jerked her hand away to scratch her head. “Don’t do what?”

“Spell me.” He slithered into a silky black shirt but left it unbuttoned, fluttering in a soft breeze and licking his chest.

She studied the intruder. For an instant, his crystal-gray eyes flashed a dark warning. How had he known she was about to launch a spell? Good guess, probably. He wasn’t a warlock. Was he? No. But his aura was confusing.

His now half-zipped pants rode precariously on his hips. She willed them to slip, wanting a second act of the peep show.

Facing her, he teased up his zipper, his gaze locked on her, his fingers in no hurry, his mouth curling into an annoying grin.

Frustrating.

Indigo tilted her face toward the warm sun. She took a deep breath before proceeding. “What are you?”

“Can’t you tell?”

“If I could, I wouldn’t ask.”

“A shifter.” He flopped onto the ground, resting on bent elbows with a knee cocked up, his sculpted chest bared by his hastily donned shirt.

“Well, shifter, you’re trespassing in my river.”

“We’re back to your river. It doesn’t belong to you. Come sit by me.” He patted the grassy spot beside him. “My weapon is tucked into my pants. You’re safe.”

She snorted but strutted toward the stranger, her long gypsy skirt trailing in the grass. He was a puzzle. Like the river, she wanted to solve him. “What the hell. Why not.” She sank beside the self-proclaimed shifter with the mixed-up aura.

Ripping her gaze away from his body, she fought the urge to stroke the hard ridges of his abs, to follow the line of hair which dipped below the waistband of his jeans. With a sigh, Indigo mirrored his pose. Beside him, she curled her neck to stare into the cloudless blue sky. While listening to the roar of the river, she felt a gentle breeze caress her skin. The light fragrance of wild prairie roses reached her nose. She stayed that way for some time.

The stranger broke the quiet, twisting toward her, his glassy gray stare fixed on her while he waited for an answer. “What do you read in the river?”

She plucked blades of grass, sending them flying when she blew on her fingers. “A little of this. A lot of that.”

“No male to help shoulder the burden?”

“What are you? The Aeternal version of a Neanderthal? Females carry their own burdens nowadays.” His thigh brushed against her hip, the contact scorching her, stirring her buried passions.

“Hmm. A strong female.” He pushed onto an arm, leaning so close to Indigo his breath fanned her cheek. He grinned, fingering the large amethyst necklace which lay between the swells of her breasts. “I like your wardrobe. Quite fetching. When we fuck, take off everything but this.”

She shivered, swatting at his hand. “Never happening.”

He flattened to the ground, eyes closed, his infuriating smirk in place. “Yes, it is.”

“Hmph.”

“Do I hear a challenge?” He again bent over Indigo, his mouth an inch from hers. This time, his lips brushed across hers like warm, luxurious sin.

But he flinched, jerking away as if she weren’t the only one feeling the smoldering heat between them.

Not so fast, stud.

Indigo threaded her fingers into his damp hair, drawing him toward her, reconnecting their mouths. After a moment’s hesitation, he took charge of the kiss. One hand cradled her neck while the other clutched her waist, pulling her in tight. He thrust a thigh between her legs. His tongue slipped inside, stroking her, plunging in and out, a seductive exploration. Hot. Thirsty. Demanding. A promise of sultry nights, sweaty bodies, sex.

His hand left her waist to tease the hem of her T-shirt. He deserted her lips, bending his head to feather kisses across her belly, nibbling her skin, making her hum with unadulterated bliss.

She arched into his fiery mouth, so soft, inviting, tantalizing.
