Vander’s frustration was evident as he pinched between his eyes. But it was unclear why. What had I done? “You let her walk in here with a gun?”

My brows furrowed as I tilted my head. “I gave it to her.”

“What?” His anger radiated around the room. I blinked, my eyes finding Cole’s, looking for understanding. He leaned back into the couch, hiding his smile behind his hand. What was funny?

“She was scared when I explained that we worked with escorts.” I still wasn’t sure what I’d done wrong. “She thought I meant sex trafficking.”

Vander’s gaze turned incredulous. “You told her about the business?”

My arm tightened on Lark as confusion washed over me. Having her soft body against me was stopping the emotion from overwhelming me. If I felt too many, my mind shut down like it had earlier.

“Grace knows what we do.” I glanced to Cole again. “And Alessandra.”

“Grace is my wife!” I shrugged, and he threw his hands up in frustration. “Do you really not see the difference?”

No. They were both women. Both involved with us. And I wanted Lark to know me. Wanted her to crave answers about me like I did for her.

“You care for Grace. I care for Lark.”

Her curly hair swept across my face as she tilted her head. Her vanilla scent seemed to float up to me as she stayed in my arms. “You care for me?”

My confusion grew. Hadn’t I made that obvious? I’d saved her life. Worked to get her protection.

I realized these feelings I had for her were more than curiosity. More than obsession. I needed to research how to handle them. How to express them to her.

“Yes, it’s very confusing.” For now, the truth would have to do. I just hoped I said it right. “I was led to believe affection takes time to develop. But I find myself strangely attached to you.”

Her bright smile seemed to shoot through my chest. “Me too.”

And then her words made the feelings burst and explode. They rained down inside me. Unsure what to do with them, I just continued to hold her. On their own, my thumbs moved, stroking her hip where we were connected.

“Dumb fuck.” Matt grumbled.

The rage washed away the good feelings she caused. But before I could move, Cole was on him. The sound of flesh hitting flesh filled the air as he punched him twice.

“You’re the dumb fuck.” He stood, straightening his suit jacket. “Insult my brother again and find out what happens.”

I was used to my brother’s defending me. I felt nothing about it either way. Except right now, I was grateful because I didn’t want to let Lark go.

“Take her home.” Vander ordered.

I didn’t wait to hear more. My hand slid down her hip until I grasped hers. She intertwined our fingers, shoving the gun back into her pocket with the other. Tingles raced up my arm.

It was only then I noticed the hardening of my cock. Having her soft body against mine had affected me in more ways than I’d realized. I didn’t understand why, but I’d figure it out.

“Should we stop for food?” I asked as she smiled up at me. “Your dinner ended up on the sidewalk.”

“Food sounds good.” Her gaze softened, making my insides feel light.

I watched her move down the hall as I stood in the doorway. My eyes lingered on the way her ass swayed in her sweatpants. They were baggy, but her curves couldn’t be hidden. I marveled again at how well put together her body was.

Just like her voice, they unexplainably called to me. But I’d find my answers.

My gaze connected with Vander. He nodded. “We’ll deal with Matt.”

I tipped my head in gratitude before I followed our feisty doctor. My little enigma. My Songbird.
