No.

I would tell him. This wasn’t the end. It was just the beginning.

“Oh, my god.” Violet stared at me with surprise as I scrambled across the room, dropping to my knees in front of her. “How?”

“Your brothers aren’t as smart as they think.” Or maybe they were because her cage wasn’t shut with a simple bolt. They’d added a padlock to the slide. “Shit.”

My head whipped around as I searched for anything that would break the lock. But there was only a dead body and the chair they’d tied me to. It would have to work.

“Move away.” I said as I grabbed it by the back slats. I lifted it over my head and brought it down hard on the padlock.

The sound was so loud. Like thunder. Hopefully, the gunshots in the distance buried the noise of our escape.

My arms trembled as I lifted the chair again. I slammed it against the lock over and over until I was breathing heavy. Until sweat dripped down my spine.

Violet shook her head. Tears shined in her eyes. But I wouldn’t give up. I couldn’t leave her here. Not with these men.

My chest heaved as I set it down for a moment while I caught my breath. Everything ached and burned. The wound in my bicep. The shallow cuts on my cheeks and neck. The bruises on the rest of my body.

My ankle throbbed as I braced to lift the chair again. I winced at the pain. My jaw clenching, but I fought against it. My swing missed as gunshots went off closer. Just outside the door.

“I’ll be okay.” She lied. “But I can’t take it if you die because you tried to save me.”

“No!” I shouted as I smashed it against the wire. Before I could pick it back up, Violet crawled across her cage. Her fingers curled into the metal as she gazed up at me with a tear soaked face.

“Just go,” she pleaded. “This is my fault. They’re my brothers.”

“Their sins are not yours. I won’t leave you.”

Loud voices erupted in the hall. More gunshots. I knew I was out of time. When I glanced back at Violet, her skin had paled.

“Do you know them?” She shook her head as her eyes widened in horror. The angry male voices grew louder. They were right outside.

Now, I was trapped too. I couldn’t go through the only door. My only choice was to hide. But where? There was nothing but cages, and I wasn’t getting back in one.

My gaze fell to the fresh body. He was a big guy.

“I’m not leaving.” I turned to Violet. “I won’t leave.”

I reassured her before closing the distance between myself and the man who’d kidnapped me. A grunt pushed from my chest as I lifted his lifeless weight. Laying on my back, I slid underneath his frame.

I ignored the bodily fluids that had leaked from him. It was better to be under a dead body than to be one.

Nathan

Blood sprayed across my face. Coating my skin in the viscous liquid. I was sure there was more red than white showing. It covered my clothes. Clung to my limbs.

Normally I would care. I wouldn’t want someone else’s bodily fluids on me. But right now I didn’t. I only had one thing on my mind. Saving Lark. And anyone who got in my way was dead.

I pulled the trigger again as another guy turned the corner. Maybe I should feel bad. I was killing people. Ruining my soul. But there wasn’t enough emotion in me to care. They’d earned this. Deserved worse.

I heard the gunshots from my brothers and Vander, but I didn’t stop to check on them. They could handle themselves. They were better than me.

I had my eyes on a target. I’d seen Aaron disappear down the hallway. The fucking coward; letting everyone else die for him.

Another guy jumped into my path, but his body hit the wall, a gunshot to the chest before he even knew who he was supposed to be aiming for. My feet slapped the concrete as I raced after Aaron. My heart slammed into my ribs as I closed the distance.
