“Who the fuck are you to ask?” A man in his mid-twenties demanded. He had shaved dark hair and tan skin that made his gray eyes seem more prominent. He must not be familiar with the criminal underworld of Sayton City if he wasn’t aware of who Vander was.

“The guy about to kill you.” Angelo smirked as he raised his gun higher.

“You wouldn’t be the first to try.” The man to the right answered. He looked a little older, with blonde hair. His gaze was kinder, but no less lethal. “Just ask the dead bodies we left behind us.”

“You killed those guys out there?” Cole tilted his head towards the front of the building. Something must have happened while I was in the room, but I didn’t know what. The guy in the middle nodded. “So you don’t work for Aaron?”

“Fuck no.” He snapped. He was the oldest of them all, wearing a suit instead of casual clothes. Even his dark brown hair was still in place.

“You’re not the buyers.” Vander lowered his gun, but eyed them suspiciously.

“We’re looking for our girlfriend,” Shaved Head said.

“Our?” Cole’s tone was skeptical as he raised a brow.

“I didn’t stutter.” He glared as he jerked towards him. Suit guy threw out an arm, checking him.

“I don’t believe you.” Angelo’s gripped tightened on his weapon. The tension in the room rose. I stepped back, pushing Lark further away from the brewing fight.

“They’re here for me.” The girl’s whisper cut through the hostility.

“Violet!” The blonde guy rushed to close the distance between them. We recognized the desperation in his eyes and none of us shot. “Are you okay?”

He dropped to his knees next to her, draping an arm over her shoulder. Finally, coming alive again, she looked up at him. “I didn’t understand. I just wanted to see my brothers.”

“I know, Little Bloom.” He pulled her to her feet, bringing her to the other men.

“We missed you, Pretty Girl.” The suit guy’s eyes softened. The gun he’d been holding forgotten as he grasped her hips, yanking her to him. I recognized the relief in his gaze. I’d felt the same when I’d seen Lark. But she didn’t embrace him.

Tears streaked down her cheeks as he kissed her. After a moment, Shaved Head pulled her away. I couldn’t hear what he whispered in her ear, but she nodded before he was kissing her, too. She held him tight, like she hadn’t done for the other.

The blonde guy took her back. He hugged her the longest. His hands running up and down her spine as she fisted his t-shirt to keep him close.

My brothers shifted on their feet. Uncertain about what to do with this girl and her men. Violet turned to look at Lark again.

“She saved me.” Her voice cracked as she held the blonde guy’s hand. “She wouldn’t leave me to die. She cared. She believed me.”

The guy in the suit crossed the room. I saw Angelo flinch, but he stayed back. I wasn’t as kind. As he stuck his hand out, I moved in front of Lark. He raised a brow at me, but kept his palm in the air as he addressed her. “Thank you.”

Lark stepped up next to me, wrapping an arm around my waist. But she didn’t reach to shake his hand. I grasped her shoulder, pulling her closer. “I didn’t do anything.”

“You did more than you realize.” He dropped his arm, turning to look at us. “You all did. You got here first.”

“They k-killed Aaron.” Violet stuttered as she leaned into the man beside her.

“And Craig?”

My spine straightened. “You lost him?”

“It was a little chaotic.” Vander shrugged. Craig wasn’t our problem. He didn’t live in Sayton City and he wouldn’t want to after this. But the looks on these men’s faces told me they wanted him. And this life was all about bargains.

“We’ll find him.” The guy in the suit said, a muscle working in his jaw.

“We owe you for saving Violet.” Blonde guy nodded in appreciation.

“I’m inclined to accept the favor now.” All gazes shot to me. I could feel Lark’s burning a hole in the side of my head. “I’ll even give you all the information we found on the other brother.”

“Fucker.” Shaved Head said. “What do you want?”
