Garrett’s words wash over us, and I believe them. I can’t imagine the queen wouldn’t have tried to help them, but looking at them as they destroy everything and everyone in their path, I can see the lack of humanity in their eyes and behavior.

They don’t feel pain the same way and aren’t as easy to kill. Elemental attacks only work if they are shadow and light, but even light is weaker and takes a lot of power to do enough to take them down.

That’s not good. Usually, things in our realm are more susceptible to our magic.

I also don’t miss that he failed to mention how easily the shadows handle them. We all know they can take the beasts down. It’s how Serena stopped them years ago, but it’s not an option now. We can’t risk her.

So, we just need to rip them apart? Pike asks, sounding almost excited. I’d like to think it has more to do with getting back to Rena than actually killing these things, but honestly, I’m not sure.

Hell, after seeing what Serena went through, I’m not sure about myself either. I want to get back to her, of course, but I also can’t deny that some payback sounds nice. They almost killed her and have no problem harming the innocent. It’s about time someone stood up to them.

Yes.

Garrett sounds less than thrilled by the idea, and it doesn’t take a genius to know why. These are his people. Who wouldn’t want to try and save them?

But that’s not an option, and it won’t do any good dwelling on that.

And we’re not in danger of becoming like them? Sol asks. It’s a good question, one I hadn’t even considered.

No. It would seem the only one who can create them is Draven, and according to my mother, he hasn’t been seen in years.

Something about this feels off, but Lyle is moving before I can think more about it.

Let’s get this over with.

Lyle takes off into the center of the village without so much as looking back. He doesn’t waste a moment, moving in to attack. The beast he chose was, of course, the largest, and they fall into a fight that quickly ends up inside a home. All I can hope is that the occupants are already gone.

Let’s try to get the villagers out. Once we do that, we can handle them easier. Pike, Storm, and Sol, you three focus on that. Blair and I will assist Lyle and handle any others that get in the way until we hear the all-clear.

With that, we break off, and while I can sense Lyle’s annoyance with Garrett calling the shots, he doesn’t say anything about it.

I’m not sure what he could say, honestly. This is Garrett’s home. His kingdom, if anyone would know how to handle these monsters and the people, it would be him.

So why can’t I shake this terrible feeling?

Igrip the horse with my legs, hugging it tight as I will it to move faster, following the tug of my bond down the dirt path. I know what the guys said, and I understand how afraid they are of losing me because I feel the same way about them. But I need to learn to trust my instincts; right now, they’re urging me toward them, not away. I have a sick feeling that if I don’t make it to them soon, something terrible is going to happen, and every second away from them is another too long.

I hear the screams a moment before the path before me begins to lighten. For a moment, I almost believe the light is the sunrise, until I remember the sun only set a few short hours ago.

It’s not until I break through the last of the forest that I realize it’s much worse.

The village isn’t huge, but with so much of it on fire, it lights up the night sky.

Who could do this to people? Families, children, elderly, people who just want to live in peace, nobody is safe.

Another scream sounds but is cut off a moment later, and I know without seeing it that someone has just lost their fight.

I’m off the horse before I have a plan. My only goal is to get as many people out of harm’s way as possible.

Everything else can wait.

I don’t even make it past the last tree before the chimera's roar shakes the foundation of the burning building around me, stealing the air from my lungs and taking me back to that night.

A tight grip on my arm pulls me from my nightmare as it flashes before my eyes while pulling me backward as well. My brain doesn’t catch up fast enough, and I stumble, but whoever has a hold of me keeps me from falling as they continue to move.

We don’t go far, stopping by the horse I just rode here before they stop, spinning me around to face them.

“What are you doing here?” Ryker hisses in my face, so close I almost go cross-eyed.
