He doesn’t move as his eyes shift around, looking at each of us before they come to rest back on me.

“Please, don’t leave me,” I plead as I take another step forward. I’m close enough now to reach out and touch him, so that’s exactly what I do.

My fingers brush his fur, and it’s as if I’ve touched a live wire. My teeth rattle in my skull, and my head spins, but I refuse to let go even as my vision blurs.

Which is how I miss his attack.

My vision clears as he growls once again, this time loud and angry, as his claw cuts through the air toward me. I know I need to move, duck, back up, something, but in my shock, I’m rooted to the ground, unable to do anything but stare as his huge paw full of razor-sharp claws cuts down toward my face.

Move!

Someone shouts in my head, but I can’t focus on who as I stare up at one of the men I love, lost in the darkness.

I’m shoved to the side with enough force that I hit the ground hard. The wind leaves my lungs in a woosh as a body presses on top of me, and I hear the gut-wrenching sound of skin tearing, followed by a cry of pain. Everything happens so fast that it takes me a minute to realize it wasn’t me who was hit.

Bright purple eyes stare down at me, searching my face as if he’s concerned about me, which is ridiculous considering he’s the one Lyle just literally ripped into. He sighs of relief, and I feel him sag against me.

“Ryker!” I yell, much too loud for how close we are.

“I’ll be fine, Darling. I’m just glad I got to you in time,” he murmurs into my hair, and I sigh of relief hearing his voice.

So much has been going wrong today that when he collapsed like that, I feared the worst.

His arms band around my shoulders, pulling me tight to him, and I let him. I watch over his shoulder as Lyle disappears into the forest, taking a part of me with him.

The end for now!
