I look to my right. Valen and Garret stand beside the wood table. “Who hasn’t?” Rose replies. “It’s all over the news. Melody saw him all cut up, sitting against the tree.”
“Whoa. That must have been intense,” Garret says, his face pallid, sliding into the bench across from us.
“Go right ahead. Have a seat,” Rose says sarcastically.
“I thought you wouldn’t mind since you’ve been watching me since we walked in,” Garret says.
Rose rolls her eyes. “You’re so full of yourself. I wasn’t looking at you.”
“Who were you looking at then?” he challenges.
“Not you,” Rose fires back. “I was looking at your friend. The one with the dark hair and piercings. I think he’s hot.”
She wasn't, but I don’t miss the way Garret’s jaw hardens or the way he glares at the guy currently playing pool with the rest of the guys.
“Are you alright?” Valen asks.
He means if I’m okay seeing Gary dead.
“Why would you care?”
“Not everyone takes seeing things like that very well.”
“He’s dead. I don’t think you’re supposed to.”
“Do you want to talk about it? Alone,” he asks suggestively.
Silence blankets between us for a beat. The tension grows thick.
“Go ahead. I’ll catch up with you later,” Rose says, breaking the awkward tension.
I slide out of the booth and follow Valen through the back exit.
“What?” I snap, leaning on the brick wall.
“Why are you mad?” Valen says this in a soft voice, placing his hand flat on the wall above me.
“I’m not mad.”
“Scared?”
“I’m not.”
His head dips. “You’re mad at me.”
I look to my left and right and notice we are alone. The sun is just beginning to set. I’m trying to hide the fact that I am upset that he didn’t text me back after last night. He didn’t tell me what happened, but in a way, I’m glad he didn’t because one of the guys ended up dead.
“I’m…”
“You’re mad because I didn’t call you back. I was…busy.”
A chill runs down my spine. He couldn’t mean what I think...
“Doing what?”
He chuckles lightly. “I was doing homework.”
“Homework?”
