“I had a paper due. It’s my senior year.”
Fuck, right. Homework. What I’m supposed to be doing instead of worrying about why he didn’t call me. Walking on campus and finding a dead body, not knowing if it’s connected to me or not.
I sigh. “I know. I’m sorry. You don’t owe me.”
“Why didn’t you ask me to go with you?”
“You mean to the game?”
He nods.
“Jealous?”
“Maybe?”
“He’s just a friend from work. I didn’t think football was your thing. Adam never mentioned you going to a game. I didn’t think you were interested.”
“I’m not. I was interested in going with you.”
A flush creeps up my neck. Is he flirting with me? “Maybe next time.”
“How about I take you out?”
“When?” I find myself asking.
“Right now.”
“Where?”
“I was thinking away from here. There are cops everywhere.”
There are. The investigation has prompted the state police to step in, and chaos is currently raging on campus. I’m sure rumors will be running rampant by the same time tomorrow if they haven’t found who did it.
“Alright.”
“Alright,” he repeats, lowering his head.
I look up, and before I know what is happening, his lips find mine. His hand wraps around my throat. We kiss. His tongue slides past my lips. My hands land on his hard chest. My tongue flicks the piercing on the corner of his lip. When we break the kiss, I’m stunned that it happened—that he kissed me.
“Let’s go,” he says softly, walking away.
My fingertips touch my swollen lips as I watch him walk toward his black Porsche. When the lights flash in greeting as he unlocks the car and opens the door, I drop my hands.
He drives away from campus. Away from the flashing lights and caution tape tied around the tree and the light post.
“It’s crazy.”
“What is?” he asks, looking straight ahead.
“That he died.” I glance at him. “The way he died.”
“Shit happens.”
“It doesn’t bother you?”
“I mean… It’s fucked up. I didn’t know him. All I know is what everyone else does. That he played football for Ohio.”
“You didn’t know him like you do Adam?”
