“Like what?” I am perplexed.

“Like find another dead kid sitting at a tree with his throat cut.” She leans close and lowers her voice. “You didn’t think he was there by coincidence, did you?”

“The other one found in the woods?”

She smirks. “Your husband hates to see you cry. He also hates when you work or when an asshole insults you.”

The diner. Jacob was at the diner. It means Zack is next, but there is something I’m missing. There is something that doesn’t make sense. Why? If they knew the older me was with Valen, why would they drug and rape me?

“Did Zack know about my disorder?”

“I’m sure he did. Why?”

I get up and hastily get dressed. “He was part of it, Veronica. He was there, and I remember another name. Sam. There was a guy named Sam, but I was drugged and was in and out. The fact that the other me doesn’t remember what the younger me does doesn’t help.”

“Tell him, Melody.”

“I think he knows, Veronica. It’s why I’m here and not at the trailer. It’s why you’re here suddenly, talking to me about this.”

She smiles. “He did say you were smart as fuck.”

Taking a seat in front of the other members of the Order and Consortium, I smile. I watch as Melissa squirms in her seat. Melissa is attempting to understand the reason for our current seating arrangement. Why did the Order call for this meeting? It’s too early to announce nuptials with graduation still far away. We haven’t had our annual gala yet. She so fondly loves to remind me that we are about to get married.

“Vikiar!” Riordan calls out. “Begin.”

“I want to announce my decision to withdraw from my alliance with Melissa. It is null and void.”

She stands. Her mouth is opening and closing as her father looks at me like he wants to murder me with his bare hands.

“How is this possible?” her father asks, bewildered, looking around the room.

“It’s simple,” Dravin says. “Valen Vikiar is not marrying your daughter.”

“Why the hell not?”

“Because she drugged and violated Prey. A Prey that happens to be his wife. It’s not the first time she has done it.”

“That’s a lie,” her father bellows.

“It’s no secret your daughter is a lesbian,” Reid points out. “Ask my wife.” Reid glances at Garret. “Ask Garret. We have witnessed her having sex with women.”

“You’re all a bunch of liars.”

The door to the church opens, and Melody walks in, with Rose close behind.

“She can’t be here,” Garret interjects, pointing directly at Rose.

“She is, and she will stay. She is Prey, and if I want her here, she stays.” Garret sits down but glares at Rose.

Melody glances at me, and I smile with pride at my wife. I nod for her to continue.

She opens the leather book from the Order to a page, but I don’t miss the darkness in her eyes.

“It says here that if a member causes the death of another, the punishment is death, is it not?”

“It is,” Old Man Caruthers chimes in. “Who are you?”

“Mrs. Vikiar. Valen’s wife.”
