I can’t help the genuine laugh that escapes me. “That’s not the kind of promise he could have kept, believe me.”

“No, I see that now. I guess you two always act almighty because you’re part of bigger, better criminal organizations. You’re not like our ridiculous petty gangs, are you? But see, between the Kings and NSC, when we owe a favor, we stick to it. We might not have much, but we still have our word.”

I don’t stop her when she walks away from me and shoulders Sam to get out of the room.

A lot happened today, and it’s barely lunch time. She needs her space.

I will give it to her for the rest of the day, while I catch up with my sister, but she better not push me away when I find her later.

Because she’s been gone for a few seconds, and I already feel the pull in my gut, wanting to bring her back right next to me.

Rose watches her leave. “Did you kidnap Kayla King?”

A warmth spreads inside me. I missed my genius of a sister. She always catches the smallest details and comes to the right conclusions.

“How did you know?” I ask, excitement buzzing in my chest. Yeah, I did kidnap Kayla King, and I made her all fucking mine.

“You call her your wife, but she obviously disagrees with that. If not that, she’s sporting bruises around her neck and the face of someone whose freedom is now out of reach. Plus”—she shakes her head in the same way I do when I’m unimpressed with someone—“the ruthless King isn’t one to let a man shackle her.”

“Shackle,” I snort. “As you can see, she’s free to roam around however she wants.”

“Inside your house.”

“Details, Ozy.” I wave a hand dismissively and step up to her, putting a hand on her shoulder. “Let me take you out to lunch.”

“With Jake,” she mentions her twin right away. I guess he should know too.

“Jake won’t want to see me.” My brother and I have had strong disagreements in the past, the main one being him stealing the girlfriend I was manipulating and using to get information on the twins.

“Stop making decisions for others, Nate. We give him the information, and he decides what he wants to do with it.”

I huff. “When did you become so wise?”

“Healing. You should try it.”

“I have nothing to heal from,” I say bluntly.

“Sure thing, brother. Let’s go.” She turns to Rachel. “Are you coming, Sunshine?”

Rachel nods excitedly. “Sure.” She takes the hand Rose is extending, and the three of us walk out of the living room, Lik and Sam on our heels.

That’s until Rose freezes and turns around. “What do you think you’re doing?”

“Um, going for lunch?” Lik says tentatively.

Dropping Rachel’s hand, she crosses her arms over her chest, narrowing her eyes at the two men. She says nothing until Sam cracks.

“We’ll give you time.”

“Enjoy your lunch, princess,” Lik adds.

“Again. I’m sorry,” Sam says, sounding pathetic.

“We both are.”

“I love you.” Sam’s eyes shine with truth.

“We both do,” Lik repeats.
