“That one is only nine thousand dollars.”

“Only?” I squeak. “Oh my god, get this shit off me.” I can’t fucking breathe with this much money on my body. Does she have any idea how many kids I could help on the North Shore with one of these dresses?

“Please, calm down. I—” She looks down the stairs, checking if Nate is coming. When she deems us safe, her attitude changes for the worse. “Okay, that’s enough. I’m so done with all you trash girls coming in with your sugar daddies and causing a scene in my shop.”

My mouth drops at the sudden fury in her voice.

“You’re lucky enough that your pussy is buying you dresses that cost a small fortune. How about a simple thank you to the man who’s getting it for you? I would kill for a man like Mr. White. I have done everything right. I went to an Ivy League, for fuck’s sake. And you…” She looks me up and down, her upper lip curling back. “With your trashy face tattoo, and your hands that have never seen a manicurist in your entire life, you somehow got a ring around your finger. So stop trying to destroy my dress, and be grateful.”

My hands fall by my sides, my jaw still hanging. I feel my fist curling, the letters tattooed on my knuckles stretching. I’m taking an angry step toward her, ready to punch her lights out, when Nate appears right behind her, a warning look on his face.

He chuckles, startling her as he puts a hand on her shoulder. “Be careful how you talk to my wife, she packs a mean punch.”

Letting her go, he juts his chin toward the stairs. “Put it all on the card.”

“No,” I interject. “I don’t want these dresses.”

“Little sunflower, we talked about this.”

“I’m not letting you buy me a hundred and six thousand dollars’ worth of fucking clothes. You—”

“Suzanna.” His stern voice makes her jump on the spot. “I said put it on the card. The two pairs of shoes too.”

She doesn’t wait any longer, running down two stairs at a time.

“This is bullshit,” I rage. “These prices are outrageous. This shopping trip is the price of a house on the North Shore! A nice one too.”

“Remember one important detail when I take you shopping, Kayla.” He takes a threatening step toward me, and I wobble on my heels as I take one back. “You don’t have a choice.”

My fingers ache with how tightly I’m clenching them, and I’m surprised I’m not drawing blood from my nails digging into my skin.

“You don’t have a choice on when I allow you out of the house. You don’t have a choice on what you wear or how much I decide to spend on my wife.” His hand goes to his belt, slowly unbuckling it.

“What are you doing?” Taking another step back, my eyes dart to the rest of the room. If he tries something, Suzanna will hear everything.

“I’m teaching you a lesson on being grateful.”

“Nate…” My back hits the wall. I didn’t realize I was that close already.

I put my hands in front of me. “Don’t.” Shaking my head, I think of how to get out of yet another insane situation he’s put me in. “I’m not ungrateful. I’m just discovering a side of money I didn’t even know was possible. I just…”

“Why don’t you save yourself further embarrassment and just take it? Turn around and lift your dress.”

I shake my head, panic overwhelming my senses. “Don’t.”

“Every second you make me wait is an extra lash to your pretty ass.”

“I can’t believe you,” I hiss. Still, I turn around. “I can’t believe for one second I thought you cared about anything I fucking feel.”

“I do care about what you feel, Kayla. But I don’t care for you refusing me anything.”

I lift my dress to my waist, and goosebumps raise across my skin when his knuckles trace my spine. “The diamonds against your pale skin make you look irresistible.”

“Get this shit over with,” I grit out.

“Are you going to scream for Suzanna?”

“I hate you.”
