“Not with my sister, I hope.”

“Nate,” Kay hisses next to me. “Now? Really?”

“I’m with Lik, actually. And I would have loved to spend time with my boyfriend without you pestering us.”

“Who do you use to hide tricky bodies?”

He huffs loudly, making sure I’m aware I’m ruining his night. “It used to be Xi, but he doesn’t do that shit anymore, so it’ll have to be me.”

“Call Xi. He’s back in business. Offer him whatever amount he wants.”

“His girlfriend’s family are billionaires. He doesn’t need your money.”

“Then threaten the girlfriend. I need him to move someone at Stoneview Country Club, and I need you to come get me and Kayla. The Wolves tried to take us out with a crazy pick-up truck.”

“Fuck. Send me your location, I’m on my way.” I hear him talk away from the phone. “Lik, call your brother.” Then back at me, he asks, “Are you alright?”

I sigh lovingly. “Thankfully, my wife saved my life because she can’t live without me.” I smile at her rolling her eyes. “But I am bleeding pretty badly, and she probably needs stitches on her face. Call Marcie and have her waiting for us at the house.”

“No,” Kayla interjects. “That bitch is not touching me.”

I pull the phone away from my face and press my finger against her wound, making her hiss in pain. “Do you want to die? No. Marcie is coming, and that’s final.”

“Fucking hate Marcie,” I hear her mumble as I talk to Sam again.

“And call Garcia-Diaz, too. Ask her if my contract with W. Beauty is still valid if Wynne…disappears.”

“Nate…why? Why did you kill him?” he asks, his voice so annoyed I almost feel bad.

“He touched Kayla, so he died. As simple as that.”

My friend stays quiet for a few seconds. “Alright, I get that.” And for once I don’t want to kill him for dating my sister. He knows what happens to men who hurt our women. Women and man in his case.

“Oh, and Sam? Get some chocolate cake for Kay, please. She hasn’t eaten anything tonight.”

I hang up and look ahead, wondering if we could use that guy’s truck to get back home quicker, but the destroyed windshield is not exactly giving me discreet vibes.

“Your contract.” Kayla’s voice is like beautiful music in the dead of the night.

I turn to her, noticing the shock on her face.

“What about it?”

She looks away to the other side of the road. “You…you didn’t even know if it was still going to be valid and you killed Wynne anyway.”

“Little sunflower.” I press a hand to her cheek, forcing her to focus on me. “What did he do?”

I watch her throat tightening as she struggles to swallow. “He assaulted me.”

“Then he dies.” I lose myself in her incredible eyes as I repeat, “It’s as simple as that.”

“But that contract was so important to you. What if it’s void because he’s dead?”

I shrug. “Then I’ll need to find another company to transport my cocaine.” I notice my gun still in her hand and softly take it back. “I’ll take that if you don’t mind. I know you sometimes have slightly murder-y thoughts toward me.”

She explodes in a genuine laugh, her head falling onto my shoulder as she calms down. “I hate you.”

“I know, little sunflower. I know.”
