He nods slowly, looking down at me with hard black orbs. “She was thrown out right away. Quick death.”

I chuckle to myself, feeling a fury like never before boiling in my veins and taking over my senses. And to think I had the exact same thought not long ago when Wynne touched her. People are really testing my patience tonight.

“I’m afraid I can’t say the same about your death,” I say.

I reach inside my jacket but come back empty handed. I try the other side. Same.

My guns must have fallen out during the tumbling.

“That’s seriously unlucky,” I huff.

He pulls out his own gun, taking his time. “Viktor Volkov sends his regards.” As he points it at my head, my eyes focus on his finger on the trigger.

That’s how I know the sudden bang! doesn’t come from him. Because he hasn’t pressed his trigger yet.

But my wife has.

And she looks absolutely gorgeous standing next to the Wolf’s dead body, her nine-thousand-dollar dress covered in blood, mud, and grass stains. Her hair is disheveled, a long line of thick red liquid running down her face from her hairline.

I smile. “I could fuck you right now.”

“I fucking hate you, Nate.” Her croaky voice gives me the strength I need to stand up.

My hands hover over her body, not daring to touch, until she snaps at me again. “The Wolves. You decided to go to war with the fucking Wolves. What kind of idiot does that?”

She sounds perfectly fine to me, and I can’t keep the joy to myself.

I grab her by the back of the head and slam my lips to hers. Her small gasp allows me to slip my tongue inside her mouth and stroke hers. I deepen the kiss by dragging her closer to my battered body and wrapping my other arm around her waist.

“For a second, I thought you were dead,” she murmurs when I pull away.

“How did that feel?”

“So fucking good.”

Short sentence. Low voice. And she looks right into my eyes. I know what that means.

I smile. “Liar.”

I press my lips to her cheek, the side of her head, her forehead. I can’t fucking stop until she tries to push me away.

“I never thought for one second you were dead.”

“Oh, really?” she snorts.

“You’re invincible, baby. We both are. The world can’t take us down. I promise.” I drop another kiss to her lips. I can’t get enough of her.

“You’re lucky one of your guns was right next to me.” She shows me something else in her other hand. “And this.”

My phone.

“What would I do without you, little sunflower?”

I take the phone and dial Sam’s number right away. Kay helps me hobble to the side of the road, and we sit on the ground.

“Your leg,” she points out, just as my friend picks up. “You need a doctor.”

“I’m on a date, Nate. This better be urgent.” He already sounds done with me, and his night just started.
