“Nate had huge amounts coming in,” I explain. “Powder is being stored at his hotels. He has people cutting in the basements, behind the storage rooms. Weed in his Baltimore warehouses while it’s being packaged, and he stores the pills in Stoneview. Got a whole-ass mansion for them. He has a family living there and all. As discreet as it comes.”

“How do you know all that?”

“Turns out, he’s so used to having me around, he doesn’t notice when I’m right there while he talks business. Plus, I looked at his books while he was in Baltimore last week. We’re talking huge amounts. That’s probably why he needs Xi.”

“Huge like?”

“Fifty keys of powder every week, for example.”

“What?” Her mouth drops open. “NSC does not have the manpower to move fifty keys a week. When Bianco was alive, we could barely move fifty keys a month.”

“We’re a team now, remember?” I say bitterly. “He’s got both our crews to run everything. The Kings were already taking care of ninety percent of Silver Falls, and now he’ll get us to do the surrounding areas. Other close cities. And the bastard has access to plenty of contacts all the way to D.C. He grew up there when he was with Bianco.”

Emma runs her tongue across her teeth. “I guess we’ll be making a lot of money, then?”

“Sure. We’re also part of a huge criminal organization now. Bigger risks with the law, bigger enemies. His shit works as long as he has the upper hand, but our crews are inexperienced soldiers when it comes to organized crime.”

My eyes cross with her questioning, worried gaze.

“The Lucianos and the Rossis have huge hierarchies in place.” I continue. “People who are trained to be part of big organizations. They will catch up, and when they do, it’s our soldiers who are going to die. And don’t forget he’s taking over the local arm dealers who used to work with the Wolves. And their hotels. When those wild dogs come out of their cave, they’ll hit. And they’ll hit hard.”

“Three crime families. That’s a lot of enemies.”

“A lot,” I confirm. “Nate is a megalomaniac. He can never get enough.” My eyes narrow as I see him put a hand on the small of Alexandra’s back and lead her toward the stairs. “And that will be his downfall.”

I’m already taking a step forward.

“Kay,” Emma calls out as she follows me. “I told you, you have nothing to worry about.”

When I get to the security guard at the bottom of the stairs, I stride past him without a second look, and I hear him telling Emma that she’s not allowed upstairs.

And yet I am. Is that what being Nate’s wife grants you? Access wherever you want?

Too blinded by jealousy and murderous thoughts, I keep going. The double staircase leads to a balcony landing that has a view of the main room. The music can’t be heard as loudly, and downstairs conversations become a low background noise.

There’s one hallway, and it leads to different meeting rooms.

I push open the door to the first one, but no one is here. Just a long table and multiple chairs, a screen where one could display a presentation.

I hear voices in the room next to it and slam the door open. “Bitch, I will end you.”

Alexandra Delacroix sits at a meeting table, wide hazel eyes on me, and Nate is standing at the other end, arms crossed and gun on the table.

“What the fuck is going on?” I grit out.

“I think my jealous wife is barging into a business meeting, that’s what I think is going on.”

“A business meeting?” I eye the girl, then him again. “Do you want to die, Nate?”

“Should I…leave?” Alexandra asks, her voice barely a squeak.

“Yes,” I snap, just at the same time as Nate casually says, “You’re fine.”

“You’re not fine,” I insist. “I will kill you.”

“She won’t,” he adds.

“I have for less than this.”
