There’s a long pause. I watch Nate, gaze narrowed on him.
His tongue pokes at his cheek, and his fingers come to rub just below his ear.
His thinking finally coming to a conclusion, he turns to Alexandra. “No, it’s true. She has.”
Alexandra jumps up from her seat. “I’m leaving.”
“No, no, wait,” Nate insists as he goes after her. “You’re fucking unbearable,” he tells me as he walks past.
He catches Alexandra by the wrist, and I’m about to fucking lose my shit.
Why?
My main mission is to escape the man I hate. I need to stop letting rage engulf me when I see him with other women.
“I’m unbearable? You’re the one flirting with women in front of my eyes!”
Alexandra whirls around, shrugging out of Nate’s hold. “We were not flirting. I’m not interested in him. He’s completely insane! Only a psycho would flirt with him.”
Nate pinches his lips, clearly wanting to laugh at her backhanded insult thrown my way.
Regaining composure, he tells her, “Think about my offer. Let your mother know. And tell Xi to call me.”
She cocks an eyebrow at him and crosses her arms over her chest. “I already told you. I’ve had people threaten me to get to Xi before. It didn’t change anything.”
“And yet you came up here with me.”
“You said you’d hurt my mom!”
“And I absolutely would have,” he answers calmly. “The people who threatened you before weren’t me. They didn’t have the power I do, and they didn’t mention taking away everything Xi worked so hard for.”
Her chest rises and falls rapidly as she takes a step back. “He’ll call. That’s it.”
“That’s all I need. Now, if you don’t mind, my wife is desperate for attention.”
Alexandra shakes her head, her long blonde waves bobbing as she does so. “Goodbye.”
She closes the door behind her, and Nate turns to me, but I talk before he does.
“Her fucking mom, Nate? You threatened her mom?”
He shrugs. “Business.”
“That’s fucked up. What do you even want with her mom?”
“She has connections, and mainly information about the Lucianos. She could be a great help.”
He takes a step toward me, but I take one back.
“And Xi? What did you say?”
He shrugs, as if his threats were nothing. “I know the people who can cut all the funding that goes to her mom’s art gallery. They are so deep in my pockets they’ve not seen the light of day in a long time. She’s the one who supports Xi’s painting career. If he doesn’t start working for me, I’ll cut it all off, and he’ll have nothing and no choice anymore.”
He stops right in front of me. “Aren’t they, like, billionaires or something?”
“Alex’s mom is, yes. But Xi won’t take a cent from them.” He shakes his head. “Pride, am I right?”
Standing right in front of me, he looks down into my eyes as I plaster my ass against the table. “Now.” He softly takes my hand, bringing it to his lips. “Let’s punish you for barging into my meeting. You’re very possessive, my little sunflower.”
