His phone vibrates in his pocket, and he pulls it out. As he looks down at the screen, his face tenses. “Well, that’s annoying.”

“What?”

“It seems someone just tried to set fire to my Baltimore warehouse.” He looks up at me, grabbing me by the elbow. “He got caught and the fire was controlled, but we need to go.”

“Why do we need to go so quickly if the damage has been avoided?” I blurt out as he drags me with him down the stairs.

“Because he’s going to get tortured, and we’ll know who sent him very soon. I need to be able to act by the time I know. And we need to reinforce security everywhere else.”

Fuck. This is bad.

He takes me all the way to the foyer and leaves me there. “I’ll get our jackets.”

He doesn’t look panicked or even in a rush, but I notice the tension in his shoulders as he turns into another hallway.

I huff, searching for my phone in my purse. The second I find it, I walk outside, ready to make a quick call with the little privacy I’m finding. There’s a small area at the top of the stairs that’s empty, the noise from inside completely cut off.

I turn my back to the stairs, keeping an eye on the entrance to check for Nate.

I’m fumbling through the numbers I want to type, when I feel a gun at the back of my head. I’ve had enough to know. That heavy, cold pressure of a muzzle cannot be mistaken for anything else.

I keep my calm as I swallow thickly. I don’t even know who it is, but it’s never a good thing when they have a gun.

“Give me the phone, Kayla.” A woman.

Raising my hands by my head, I show the phone, and she takes it out of my hand.

“I promise you this can go smoothly. You get in the car with me, we go on a little road trip, and I get to teach your husband not to fuck with us. But if you like acting brave, I can make this very, very painful. And I can make it last hours too. It’s a little trick of mine.”

I lick my lips, keeping my hands high. “The gun really isn’t needed—”

“Kayla!” The second I hear Emma’s voice and her clicking heels, the woman behind me wraps her forearm around my throat, dragging me to her chest as the gun comes to my temple. Fuck, she feels really tall, and I’m in heels too. And fuck, she’s strong.

All I see is Emma stopping in her tracks, her eyes widening as they look above my head.

Her voice trembles when she finally says her name. “Lucky.”

Oh.

Fuck.

They sent Lucky for this?

“Little Emma Scott.” Her voice resonates against my back as she talks. “How’s your dad?”

Emma’s hands tremble by her sides as they curl into fists.

“If you take her…you’ll have Nathan White after you. You won’t survive that, I promise you.”

Lucky laughs. “Oh, sweetheart, why do you think we’re taking her? He’s not after us. We’re after him. But hey, since you’re here.”

I feel the gun leave me, and the only thing I see is Lucky’s arm extending toward Emma.

She puts her hands in front of herself. “Lucky, don’t…”

“Don’t!” I gasp, barely able to breathe in her hold. “Don’t kill her. I’m coming.” I take a breath. “I’m coming with you.”

“One doesn’t cancel the other one out,” she says calmly.
