“We’re about to spend a lot of time together, Lucky,” I tell her. “You should be a little nicer to me if you don’t want me to drive you insane.”

“The time we spend together depends on how long I keep you alive.”

“Lucky,” Vito huffs, already done with our interaction. “Let’s move.”

I stand, doing the button of my tux, and give Emiliano a nod as I follow the other two out. The Lucianos won’t kill me.

Or at least, I don’t think they will.

It wouldn’t be my first go at spending a bit of time in a mafia family’s basement. Not even theirs. There’ll be a bit of pain. They’ll get the Canadians back, probably a lot of my business, and we’ll agree to stay out of each other’s way. Or at least me out of theirs. My business will hurt, but I won’t die. Mainly, Kayla will be free, and that’s all that counts.

We go down the cement stairs that lead to their basement of tortures, and the coppery smell of blood hits my nostrils, setting my nerves on fire.

She better not be hurt.

My breath catches in my throat when I see her. She’s sitting in the exact same position from the picture. Nothing has changed at all. She’s tied up but unharmed, fine, alive.

“Nate,” she sighs, but her face falls, and her eyes don’t shine like I expected them too.

She’s not happy.

“Why did you come?” She shakes her head.

Is she disappointed I’m here?

“Why did I come?” I repeat. “Why did I come to rescue you from kidnapping? Because you’re my wife, Kayla. And no one gets to hurt you.”

Her head falls forward as Vito undoes the cuffs behind her. She brings her wrists to her front, massaging them.

“Get up.”

His order pisses me off, and I let him know right away. “Watch your tone with her.”

Looking at me, he presses his lips together. “Don’t you think you’re in enough trouble as it is with us?”

Instead of answering, I talk to Kayla, who’s still sitting. “Get up, Kay. Now.”

“Nate—”

“Get up!” I bark harshly. I need her out of here. I need her safe.

“Let’s just go,” she tells me weakly as she finally stands. She’s still wearing her satin dress, the expensive heels, her diamond bracelets I can use to cuff her.

She’s beautiful, breathtaking despite looking exhausted from being held here.

She falls into my arms, breathing me in, and I wrap my arms around her waist. My heartbeat settles with her against me. “You’re fine. Everything’s fine.”

She shakes her head in the crook of my neck. “It’s not…”

I don’t let her get into her emotions. I step away from her, pushing her to the side, and sit in her place.

“You’re going to go home with Emma, little sunflower. And you’re going to wait there until I come back.”

“Which won’t be any time soon,” Lucky adds brusquely.

I narrow my gaze at her, letting Vito cuff my hands behind my back, making me nothing more than a harmless victim.

But I’m not scared. As I watch Kayla take a step back, knowing she’s safe and free to go, I know this was the best decision I ever made in my life.
