Until Lucky pulls out her gun.

And gives it to Kayla.

When my wife points the gun at me, my heart stops.

He chuckles to himself. That’s what he does first.

My heart is already breaking, and the bastard is practically laughing like the psycho he is.

“Oh, little sunflower,” he finally says as he calms down. “It doesn’t matter how many times I was warned, I still underestimated you.”

“I know,” I rasp, barely any power in my voice.

This does not feel good. Not at all. It was meant to be the moment I find my freedom, my happiness. Where is it?

“Tell me,” he says. “Tell me how you did this. I want to see the extent of your scheming little mind.”

“You don’t need to know.” I shake my head. I feel like I might be sick.

“Amuse me. When did you start planning?”

“The… The day you sent Emma to check on me in the bathroom. I took Lucky’s number from her phone.”

“Huh. What else?”

“I contacted her on the phone you gave me. Told her to pass on messages to Vito for me. That you were building your own army. That you were going to start wars.” My gaze drops, unable to hold his enchanting eyes. “That you needed to be stopped.”

As usual, I’m sacrificing something for survival. Except this time, it feels horrible. Disgusting.

“Look at me, baby. It’s okay. That was smart. But I checked your phone regularly. I didn’t see anything there.”

Oh, god. I can’t listen to this. The way he calls me baby, the way he’s the one trying to reassure me… His praise should be reserved for the love we share. Not for this situation.

“I always deleted everything.”

“And remembered Lucky’s phone number every time you needed to text her?”

I nod, looking up at him again.

He’s smiling. “Of course. Numbers are easy for you. And when did you plan this?” He looks around, obviously talking about his current predicament.

“A few weeks ago… Fuck, Nate. I wasn’t going to go ahead with it. I wasn’t. And then yesterday…you could have fucking saved yourself had you not been such a possessive asshole.”

That drags a soft laugh out of him. “I wasn’t going to let you go. This is your only solution. But you made me worry. I thought your life was at risk.”

“I know.” It takes all of me not to say sorry for making him worry.

He sighs. “I’m glad you’re okay. Was the kidnapping from the town hall planned too?”

“I didn’t realize they were going to send Lucky to actually kidnap me.” Her hard gaze darts to the redhead. “There really was no need, was there? The plan was for me to just get in the car and…”

“And you knew I was going to come for you.”
