He smiles at me like I did him a favor.

Like he really didn’t want to live if it was without me.

KAYLA

I Found - Amber Run

I drop to the floor, my knees unable to carry me.

“Oh my god!” I scream, head shaking rapidly. “No, no, no…”

“It’s okay.” Vito is on me suddenly. I forgot he was here. Him and his psycho of an enforcer. “You did the right thing.”

He takes the gun away from me, at the same time as Lucky advances toward Nate.

“No, don’t touch him!”

“For fuck’s sake, Vito. Get her out of here.” She huffs, like I’m a bother to her.

Vito grips me by the shoulders, lifting me back up. He holds me tightly as he walks me out. I watch Lucky put a white sheet over Nate’s body. His head has fallen forward.

“He’s dead,” I sob as Vito drags me upstairs.

“He’s dead,” he confirms sternly. “It’s okay, Kayla. We’ll take care of it from now on.”

“He’s dead,” I repeat like a crazy woman.

He brings me all the way to the door. “Listen. It’s fine. Our family will take over the North Shore, over the whole Silver Falls and Stoneview area. We’ll take care of you, okay?” He squeezes me harder. “You earned our respect, Kayla. We’d already heard about you, but now we know why you’re the ruthless King. Well done.”

I couldn’t care less about the North Shore right now. I would rather die than live up to my reputation. I can’t fucking breathe.

I killed Nathan White.

I killed my husband.

I killed the only person who made me feel every single emotion on the spectrum. But the one he made me feel the strongest was too much for either of us to handle in a healthy way.

The toxicity killed us.

I killed him, and his death killed me.

Vito opens the door to a car. Emma is already in the passenger’s seat. Her eyes widen, and she jumps out. Maybe it’s my state, maybe it’s the blood on my face.

“What happened? Kayla, are you okay?”

I look at her, swaying on the spot. “I killed him.”

“What?” It’s not only the shock that makes it worse, it’s the genuine pain that floods her features. “Kayla…”

“Go,” Vito says as he pushes me into the passenger seat. He puts my seatbelt on, I think. I can’t register anything anymore, only the smell of Nate in the car. His car.

When Emma starts the engine, I look at Vito’s mansion with a desperate cry. As if it isn’t already too late. If I just look a little bit longer, maybe he’ll run out. Maybe I missed. Maybe…

He doesn’t come out.

He doesn’t because he’s dead. The feeling of his blood on my face will forever haunt me. Just like his rare smiles, the flat tone of his voice, or the way he could hug me so tightly.
