I wouldn’t have believed him but Nina had said … There are scientists who do such work. Some are skilled enough to cut off an angel’s wings and replace them with bigger ones.

I would have fallen to my knees had I not been sitting on a chair.

Chapter Thirty-Nine

A New Plan

Michael

I led the flight to Mount Skulls—Otis behind me and Gorgo in Tank’s arms. Our wings flapped through the clouds as gusts of wind played across our faces. We passed towns, the wild grasslands, and hills, until the jagged outline of towering peaks came into view.

Instead of heading straight toward the mountain, I pointed downward, signaling my direction.

“Where are you going?” Gorgo shouted. “I swear that boy flies like he’s intoxicated.”

Gorgo and the others had not spotted a wagon and an angel with silver hair and wings flying toward us. When Snow noticed we were soaring down, she followed suit.

I landed in a crouch in front of the wagon, and my companions landed a moment later. As I rose, I took a quick glance around the cluster of apple trees, then to a redhead, two vampires, and Snow.

“Dawn. Snow.” Tank ran up to them and wrapped both of them in his arms.

Otis joined their circle. “It’s so good to see you.”

The four of them remained for a heartbeat longer, their arms still around each other and smiling. Their love and affection tugged my heart and I missed Peter, Mother, and my sister.

Gorgo cleared his throat. “This reunion is great, but we have to get going.”

Snow broke away first and faced me. “Hello, Michael. It’s been so long.” Her cheeks turned pink when her gaze landed on my bare chest.

For a moment, with the sunlight pouring through the canopy of trees and highlighting her beautiful face, Snow glowed in a halo bright light. She was absolutely stunning and she took my breath away. She made me forget about Simone. Why couldn’t I have fallen in love with someone with a beautiful heart like her?

“I wish we were meeting again in better days, but here we are.” I took her hand and kissed the back of it.

“Who is this angel?” The redhead sauntered toward me, her hips swaying.

Snow broke out of her trance. “I should introduce everyone.”

Gorgo shook his head. “Why are we being so proper?” He pointed at each one of us by name. “Michael. Snow. Dawn. Tank. Otis. And these two vampires are Markane and Abacus.”

“Oh, don’t forget.” Snow pointed behind her on the edge of the driver’s seat to two mice. “The white one is Sunshine and the black one is Midnight.”

“Squirrel! Ssi-bal.” Tank jolted to the other side of me so fast, he almost knocked me over.

Everyone laughed. A nice reprieve to the danger ahead.

“They’re not squirrels.” Snow giggled. “They’re mice.” The two hopped on her arm and crawled up to her shoulders, their whiskers twitching.

“The big angel is afraid of mice too,” Abacus, the smaller one said to Markane. “They wanted to bite me.”

A vampire afraid of little creatures, now that was hilarious.

“What’s the big deal? You just stomp on them.” Markane raised a foot and brought it down hard.

The mice on Snow’s shoulders, one on each side, squeaked faster, their tiny noises grew louder. Must be a slew of curses.

“Don’t worry. I won’t let them harm you.” Snow patted the mice’s heads, then she wagged a finger at the vamps.

Their shoulders dropped comically and they nodded like little boys.
